Do you have KX Win98SE install problems?
Hi
I posted a thread about this on 23/06/03 KX install Problem on wn98SE began with 3534a Problem is still there with all 3535 Back to 3533 : everything OK =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= It took 5 months to understand my bug but now I got it and I'm sure I'm not the only one. The only thing I don't understand is why 3533 gets back everything OK. So let me explain and I hope it will help. My machine is Asus a7n8x deluxe, athlon XP2600+, 2 40Go HDs, multiboot WinXP, Win 98SE, 2 SB : SB0092 with LiveDrive and SB0060 I tried all versions of kx, and since 3534a. No problem under XP but all versions have been a pain to install under Win98SE : No message after 1rst reboot (Device names have dynamically changed....), KXMixer not starting, no way to reset configuration or global settings. In control panel, multimedia, audio properties : bad names Kx Wave 0/1 instead of KX Wave SB0092 10K2 0/1 ... and Midi devices only present for the first card installed in the advanced Tab. I used a freeware called "JV16 Powertools" (a kind of system cleaner) because it has an original registry search tool. My keywords search were : "KX" (be careful if you have QuarKXpress installed), "SB 0060", "SB0092", "Eugene" and "#kx_" Well, even after manually uninstall kx drv, run "KXsetup" --clean, run "Driver Cleaner", run "Norton Windoctor", run "Microsoft Regclean", this tool has found about 4000 entries in my registry relative to KX and I am not talking about specific music softwares parameters (Like Cakewalk, VST, Traktor and others) Run regedit, go to : hkey_local_machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\MEDIA\ I had 142 folder entries relative to the different versions of KX I once installed, I even found traces about KX drv 1rst version. So the bug is that Windows (KX?) installs a "WDM audio driver mapper" and a "WDM midi driver mapper" for all audio drivers (WDM compatible) mentionned there, even if it is no more installed. I found further on in registry 142 "WDM audio driver mapper" and 142 "WDM midi driver mapper" installed I'm not sure it's the same for you but "my" system does this. I knew that Windows had limitations about the number of midi ports it can manage, but apparently it can't manage 142 audio drivers too. SO WHAT TO DO? 0 - Download and install JV16 - www.jv16.org - (freeware) 1 - backup your registry, if you have problems you will be able to restore it under Dos by running Scanreg /restore (scanreg default path is Windows\command) 2 - delete there (hkey_local_machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\Class\MEDIA\) all folders relative to KX, 3 - Make a search with keyword "driver mapper" and delete all entries relative to KX 4 - Reinstall "269601usa8.exe" found on KX site or in a full KX version (not an update) 5 - Reboot 6 - Install latest KX version It should work like a charm at the first try. Thanks Eugene, Max and all contributing people for this excellent driver (Remember Rainman : I'm an excellent driver :-) To stay serious : Wouldn't it be possible, Eugene, that on a new version install, registry keys from earlier versions at this address would be cleared or replaced by the new ones. Thanks a lot again everybody. You are more than brothers for me. Vik |

Hi!
Can´t really follow you. There are some things that you said, that I also seen on my system, but: if you reboot your machine after the error message "names have dynamically changed..." all is okay! After reboot all names are right and kxmixer works well! Under Win98SE it is necessary to reboot twice. You may right about the multitude of registry entries, but installation never really fails on my system with ´98SE. Kind regards! TravelRec.

Hi travelrec
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> if you reboot your machine after the error message "names have dynamically changed..." all is okay! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I don't wanna bother anybody but I wrote : NO MESSAGE after 1rst reboot (Device names have dynamically changed....), KXMixer not starting, no way to reset configuration or global settings. If this message (that I don't consider as an error message because it's a normal part of KX install under Win98SE) If this message does not appear at first reboot, you can do what you want Install drivers manually, reboot the number of times you want, on my machine it's the same. KX not starting. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> installation never really fails on my system with ´98SE >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Maybe something specific to my hardware config. Do you have two soundcards in your machine? I have another machine with a single SB0102 with kx, Win98SE and installation of kx drivers update is much easier Anyway I'm not lying and I wanted to explain this just to contribute if anyone experienced the same thing. I m sure that it was my problem because after deleting all this entries everything went OK. Apparently, I'm the only one to get this bug (I don't know if it's KX or Windows related or maybe both) but i can't tell you that I spent hours and hours since 5 months to understand this. BWT there is something I don't understand If i put a shortcut to "debugview" in start menu, when windows starts and kx working OK debugview says this. Is this expected? |

Hi Vik!
Sorry for my blue-eyed comment, but it seems strange to me, what you described. No, I haven´t 2 kx-cards inside my compi and this could be a problem - or not. Many other users with 2 cards haven´t any problems (if I can believe their forum threads). I had a similar problem like yours in the early times with kx, as the whole system was corrupted by creative´s stuff and after a new system installation I never seen this anymore. Since I´m also a little beta tester of all releases, there were never installation probs, only some buggies here and there and sometimes bluescreens - but this couldn´t be helpfull to you. Your debug view says nothing to me, maybe to Eugene! And be sure, I believe what you said - why not. I only thought, that you are on the wrong way, but this was my mistake. Sorry for that again! Good luck for figuring out! TravelRec.

thanks for the information you've provided
I'm sure people experiencing similar problems will find it useful >> Wouldn't it be possible, Eugene, that on a new version install, registry keys from earlier versions at this address would >> cleared or replaced by the new ones these registry entries aren't created by kX Software the =only= registry key created by kX is current_user\software\kX (+ some file associations in classes_root) -- and -all- of them are automatically removed by "kxsetup --clean" as for the "hkey_local_machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\Class\MEDIA\" key, it is created by Microsoft setup engine that is not controlled by kX... so, certain (manual) hacks are necessary in case of troubles /E p.s. Hi
Thanks Eugene for your reply. >>>>kX software doesn't use the word 'Eugene' This is a part of the inf file for KX driver : ; Manufacturer ProviderName="Eugene Gavrilov" MfgName="Creative Labs - kX Project" DiskDescription="Eugene Gavrilov kX Driver Disk" So consequently your name is present in our registry as the provider of the driver. (Normal) I understand now that these entries are created by windows but I thought your setup could control them a bit more. sorry. Eugene you don't answer about the debugview message. It should mean that you are in Win9x... (kxmixer tries to open mixer devices for each waveport but... This is the thing that causes "Not working PCM/Wave volume in Win9x" issue)

thanks for your reply Max
So, though it's causing a bug, it's expected and not specific to my machine. Tell me if I am not correct. Vik |
