kX Project (re)organization

hello everybody!

just some ideas & thoughts I wish to share with you

----
The main idea is to try to distribute certain tasks related to kX Project among kX users. I understand that most of them aren't programmers, so I don't insist people start coding immediately However, there are certain tasks that don't require any special knowledge but might help the community.
Here's the list of such tasks:
1. writing kX documentation, examples, screenshots
2. sharing kX settings (I'm currently working on some add-on for our main site to facilitate presets/settings sharing)
3. beta-testing particular driver features or particular hardware/software issues
4. (anything else to add? any ideas?)

now, some details:

(1): I suggest we assign a knowledge base coordinator (or a board of coordinators)
(and due to lack of time, I'm afraid I won't be a candidate for that -- but I will be checking all the officially released information to be valid at least at the time of publication)
I suggest we ask Daniel Drummond, NappyLady, and TravelRec to form the knowledgebase board
I suggest 'RIV@NVX' is our kX HTMLizer (to avoid future problems with W3C validation )

any DSP-related stuff is to be discussed with Max M., LeMury and me (and, probably, Soeren_B if we manage to catch him)

[Off-Topic:] (during the last two years there were some active forum users that showed their understanding of kX internals. some of them are still posting, some are not. I miss some of you ... I didn't wish to offend anybody by not-mentioning him/her as a candidate for the knowledgebase board. I simply reviewed last month messages. if you feel I've forgotten you, please let me know).

(2): any people familiar with PHP and site security are welcome to assist me

(3):
I also suggest we form a group of beta-testers for testing all the aspects of the driver before each driver release:
including:
1. soundfont testing
2. asio testing
3. games
4. AC-3
5. (certain hardware aspects, including HT/SMP)
6. (any ideas?...)

if you are willing to form the particular beta-testing sub-group, please let me know
we will need to prepare a special testing procedure for each feature/application (ATTN: Riva )

----

that's it for now
concerning your possible involvement into the project: please be ready to spend certain amount of time. if you feel you cannot spend, say, 1-2 hours per week, I'm afraid it would be hard to co-operate.
in order to avoid converting this thread into a collection of unreadable messages, I suggest you start a separate topic discussing particular aspect of my present initiative

please, keep in mind my previous 'official statement': it is up to the kX Community to keep the project up and running

/Eugene

[P.S.]

I forgot one important thing: translations! one of the major tasks is to find people willing and able to translate any kX documentation and software timely. most of the present kX Driver translations are outdated...

Good ideas Eugene! I will follow this thread, and I will sign up for some beta testing (maybe Cubase/ASIO) and Bosnian translation. /Eminos

Hi Eugene,

Regarding the project popularity, I definitely encourage this idea to share tasks.

I'm a C++ coder and certainly can spend time on the project (though I think talent is more important than time and I hope I have more to offer than just time). Actually I believe that the Win32/DSP/Driver etc... culture is much more critical than C++; I don't have a large experience on these subjects apart from some DSP code that I wrote a long time ago and which is now officially part of your project . Well at least you can try me on some particular tasks and U'll decide if I can be a valuable addition.

In about two years this is the first time I post any message (sorry for that!) but given the fact that I greatly appreciate the efforts of this kx communitty I think (maybe) I could help translating from english to spanish some of the documentation you may decide. No programming skills, I have used KX drivers mainly for the Soundfonts facilities it gives, and now I´m ready to jump from APSlive drivers to KX entirely!.-------Say no more. Bye and much thanks Eugene.

Default Post

I've got plenty of spare time. I would be willing to help beta test games. I have amassed quite a broad collection over the years.

My current project is to write a short, simple manual on analog recording with 2 SBLives/KX/Ntrack.

Probably the front end of the manual could be generic and others could provide instructions on ASIO recording for CUBASE, SONAR, whatever other ASIO compliant programs are being used.

I could also do some translations English to Spanish.

nice to read this postings

----

for translators:
1. please decide -who- exactly will translate the documents / driver files into Spanish (or, if you wish to contribute both, this might improve overall quality of the translation -- but make sure you synchronize your work)
2. download the very recent release (3536b) and follow our translation guide (www.kxproject.com/trans.php)
3. if you wish to translate the help file, drop me a message since help files need to be extracted in a special way (start separate thread, pls)

== a note for kX documentation team: the 'translation guide' as well as 'translating help file' are to be updated depending on any questions people usually face ==

----

for soundfont testers:
the main idea: check if CL, APS and kX drivers sound similar (you will probably need dual-boot configuration or switch drivers often)
don't forget to test software synths, too
at the moment, the automatic testing tool is not available (since we need some free programmers to finish it *)
so, only 'audio/listening' tests are possible at the moment

----

for gamers:
I suggest we:
1. start a new thread ('beta-testing games')
2. find out our possibilities (that is, a list of games, full hardware specs of each beta-tester etc...)
3. create a testsuit
4. create an informative 'bug report' form

----

/Eugene

p.s.
>> Eugene you not leaving are you or just taking a break?

well... I don't think I'm leaving. at least, not at the moment

The beta (and even alpha) versions are publicly released - everyone can test them. Just look for the latest thread here in the General forum that starts with "xxxxx development release" and you'll find links.

I wish to contribute in Traditional Chinese translation (Both software and docs), current translations just convert from Simplified Chinese, which many phrases used are not suitable for Taiwan/Hong Kong users.

[to the translators]:

please start a new thread and post the present list of translation volunteers
the main idea of my initiative was users' own management ability -- I will interfere only if I see anything goes wrong
if you wish to find any co-translators, start a new thread: something like "spanish translation" etc... (since not everybody reads this topic to the very end )

I also think a Game Support thread would be great, where we can compile a list of supported games and list the ones that don't work so you can try to fix it.

Spanish translation

Hi Doug and everyone. I want to help to the spanish translation. (I am spanish), but I will not be able to start until four or five days because of my work. If anyone has begun to do it please tell me and we can share the task. I will leave my mail in my profile or simply post a reply here.
Nando

PD.: Yo puedo engargarme de la supervision de la traducción (soy español nativo) pero no estoy seguro de mi tiempo libre y no quisiera llegar a ser un estorbo más que un "jefe". De todas formas, Doug, si no hay nadie más, estoy dispuesto. Aunque sin prisa. Please keep in touch.

Hi Eugene and everyone. I start now the spanish translation and will have some free time in the weekend for this but I have a very silly question : Where is the 'lang.ini' to translate!!!! I'm looking for it but could't find it. I'm sorry, I'm not programmer.
2º Question: should I use the LCID number of the 'Spanish Tradicional Sort' or the 'Modern Sort'? I never knew the difference and I haven't got any inttencion of speaking like 'Cervantes'... Please answer me as soon as possible because I've got time enough this weekend for this.

Impatiently,
Nando

It's in kxskin.kxs (Either in kX installation directory or your Windows\System32. Use WinRAR or WinZIP to extract the lang.ini.

For the exact LCID, you can make a test in lang.ini.
Find a easy-to-see string (E.g. Speaker Test) and try to add your translation using one of the LCID.
Then put the file back to kxskin.kxs and copy it to your Windows\System32 directory (Close kX Mixer first).
After that, run kX Mixer and see if the "Speaker Test" is translated, if yes that the LCID is correct.
