As the others have said, don't change it now. The reason? Doing so may result (and usually does) in having to reinstall the OS....maybe even a full reformat.

"Resolution: If ACPI appears to be causing a problem with an ES/PCI card, there are two ways of solving the problem:

The easiest way: would be to disable APCI in the PC’s BIOS.

The other way: If ACPI is not a configurable item in your BIOS and you have Windows 2000, then you can disable ACPI by reinstalling Windows 2000. This is not a difficult procedure either, but it requires re-installing Windows 2000 from scratch, and reinstalling all of your software back on the PC."

Taken from here.

ACPI

Laptops are where ACPI really makes sense (power management). Also, if your laptop has XP, ACPI doesn't really pose problems, in most cases. Win2K is sometimes a different story. If you choose to disable ACPI and enable Standard PC HAL, expect to reinstall all your drivers. (Been there, done that.) It's probably easier to "nuke and repave," but it can be done.

This page from the ST Audio website contains both useful information and links to other pages with more information. It contains a table of popular PCs paired with which HAL works best.

http://www.staudio.de/kb/english/2000xp/index.html

Here's the method I used on a Win2K HTPC:

Methods for a new OS install are also discussed.

Good Luck!

ACPI

Hi there... Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents.

At one point I decided I would try and turn ACPI off just because there are so many proponents of doing so. I did it with a full reinstall of windows XP. All I can say is on my system turning off ACPI did not improve performance at all, instead it made it horribly unstable and slow. I reinstalled XP 2 days later with ACPI and it back to running great. I changed for no other reason then to check if my system would be any better then it was... which was perfectly stable with nice low latency audio thanks to kxproject. So if your system is running well now, you should probably leave it alone...

Good Luck

My System...
AMD XP1900
ECS K7s5a - Modified AMI BIOS APIC enabled

XP and ACPI

Ref: links in my post above. In general, ACPI is recommended in XP, but NOT recommended in Win2K. Mileage may vary

ACPI is GOOD not bad, just so everyone knows

Seems as if though many people think it's something bad that they need to turn off.

The only time you should run without ACPI is if you have some card that cannot handle virtual IRQ's (ACPI).
