I installed a chm decompiler and got the help file extracted. Viewing the source of every html like this:

So if I replace every word included, without "touching" any of the strings and after that, save the file, would it be ok?
I'm very confused. I tried to use a plugin as you said, but note that I have not installed any MS word or proggramming tool on my PC. (just music programmes, audio applications).

This is classic html

If you want it to be cool, you got to open these files in an html editor :

Frontpage, dreamweaver, word etc, etc

and then you won't see the code but only graphic element and it's gonna be easier to edit

May be search google for "free html editor"

Yes, replace all words outside tags are OK (Recommend not translating the anchors and filenames), then save the file and recompile, and you will get the new translations in the chm file.

Besides the htm files, there is also an index file you need to translate, which will be displayed in left side of the help window.

Another thing, please try to edit the file by pure text editors (Such as MS Notepad, UltraEdit, Crimson Editor, etc.), because using a html editor may generate extra useless tags or modify the layout automatically.

Though I realized that an html editor is needed, I've already got one installed, Starkwong got me a little confused again.


If I edit the file in MS notepad in what file format should I save the file, because I think that notepad can't save in html but in single .txt format, would it be OK in .txt? or should I try with an html editor? I already started translating in html editor and it seems to me OK.

any answer appreciated.

well.. yep
don't touch any text between '<' and '>' symbols ('tags')
(except, probably the 'alt="aaa"' strings)
also, don't change filenames etc..

that is, change only the text that looks like human-readable one
(you can open the file in your internet explorer in order to check, if the particular text string needs to be translated)

yep... some html editors modify html files automatically... this is a bad idea
so, 'notepad' is the best tool
(if you prefer any other utility, make sure it doesn't add any additional tags, properties and so on...)

That means, to edit the html file just like editing a plain text file (In fact all files that only contains text can be modified using Notepad, except editing files with foreign characters)

And if you open an html using Notepad, then when you save it, Notepad will still use the old name to save.
If you want to save as .html extension in Notepad, you need to select the "List files of type" to "All Files (*.*)", then the file saved will not become .html.txt.

I uses Crimson Editor to translate the help files to Traditional Chinese.
