3536 rc2

hello!

one more 'internal development' release
this time, mainly for HT/SMP machines
(non-SMP users: please try this release, too -- in order to check everything)

the changelog:
Improved 3-D audio attenuation and Doppler models
Improved kernel-level 3-D audio synchronization
Improved SMP / HyperThreading compatibility (EXPERIMENTAL)
Fixed bug with kX Mixer notifications / RemoteIR support
Effect names and languages are now sorted alphabetically in the kX Tray menu
Added support for CL-compatible sampling rate interpolation (compatibility option)
Added option to reset hardware voices (kxctrl -rv)
Option to turn off FXBus amounts smoothing added (compatibility option)
Improved SoundFont support (looped and non-looped samples)
Minor sfman32.dll compatibility issues solved
Improved AC-3 decoding of non-standard AC-3 streams
The position of plugin windows are now saved
Fixed bug with center/lfe/digital channels not muted when headphones are plugged-in
Fixed incorrect vertical peak meter visualisation
Fixed minor bug in kX Automation
Added 'Expander', 'Expander+', 'WaveGen3' DSP effects
Added 'Delay A' and 'Delay B' effects
Fixed bug with kX DSP displaying resource allocation incorrectly
Danish, Traditional Chinese, Polish and Spanish translations updated
kX API: added card-specific input/output labeling
kX API: added support for text-align properties
Fixed bug with invalid FX routings ('no reverb' issue)

note: rc2 includes rc1, rc1.1 and 'special fixes' released earlier

todo (before 3536 'final' is out... well... if I have enought time):
improve Surrounder (Surrounder+) effect
check ac-3 channel assignment (not fixed yet)
further kX API improvements (iDane)

known issues/ToDo's for 3537 etc... [well, some of them are rather old ones]:
incorrect long SysEx handling [UART In/Out] -- could have been fixed?
ac-3 passthru for 10k1 cards [as soon as Extigy is here]
24/96 asio support (well, probably in Dec'2003 ... Jan'2004) -- a good NewYear present?
EAX support
dB / % toggle
drums/metronom in Cubase
incorrect handling of 'renamed' DSP effects
better 'update' function (kX Editor / kX API)
check p16v rec/playback
better MIDI panning (remove clicks)
kx automation improvements -- well -- to be discussed
GSIF2 support (as soon as Tascam is ready)
a new mixer (?.. well... probably, 2004 is a good year to start this)
resizeable kX DSP window
check if Doppler artifacts are still audible -- (please test that)
check if certain 3-D sounds are still invalid -- (please test that)
improve soundfont support -- still waiting for people willing to help (C++ knowledge is required)
try to fix soundfont memory limitation (currently, I have no ideas about this... any help welcome)
multicard asio (if technically possible)
finally, start kX Knowledgebase project ...
start kX Preset Sharing project ....
finally start intensive beta-testing programs...
etc...

please report here any bugs / problems found (test thoroughly that is, a good test is to start Cubase + Sonar + WinAmp + AC-3 playback + SoundForge (recording) simultaneously + open kX Mixer's peak meter & analyzer)

any ideas and ToDos are to be discussed in a SEPARATE or NEW THREAD please!

http://kx.maincore.nl/beta/kxdrv3536rc2-update.exe
http://kx.maincore.nl/beta/kxdrv3536rc2-sdk.exe [for developers only]

Just I wanna be sure-so a question:
My last drivers are 3536c
It means I can install THIS RC2 over it without installing RC1 and additional patch before?

Are these updates better than the 3535 update or do they contain more bugs ?

I was thinking of downloading them , but will i be better off sticking with 3535 ?

Have no problems with 3535 by the way.

Just wondered if these new ones might give me problems , or are they better ?

I've been using various 3536 builds for a couple weeks now without major issues. The only thing you may have to worry about is that it breaks compatability with some of the unofficial plugins that people have released (so you will need to wait for 3536-compatable versions of those plugins to be released by the authors)

>> 3536 installation

if you install 3536 over any -existing- 3536, it is advised to re-register kxfxlib.kxl or completely uninstall and re-install
(since certain settings aren't compatible and are not handled by the kxsetup properly)

this release can be installed 'as-is' without any additional updates

>> breaks compatability

yes, sometimes

>> Have no problems with 3535 by the way

install 3536 only if you wish to take part in beta-testing...
if you are regular user and don't wish to try 'unstable' releases -- perhaps, it's better to wait till the version is announced on our site
if you are a -beta-tester- (or wish to be one) -- then, definitely, install & check this version

>> 3536 releases

well, this 'rc2' has a very new code that might affect overall system stability (the 'famous' HT/SMP stuff..)
so, if rc1 works fine, it doesn't mean 'rc2' will

/Eugene

What is the proper procedure for re-registering kxfxlib.kxl? I see that kX puts one copy of it in Program Files and another in the Windows\System32 folder. Does it matter which one I register? I guess I should do the latter since that's what seems to be in my Windows registry.

Right click on it and choose install (or register). Or just install this update, reset the setting (through kx menu) and you're done...

Hi Eugene and KX addicted

Thanks for this new release

>>>>>Improved SMP / HyperThreading compatibility (EXPERIMENTAL)

Do you think that this can affect non SMP / HyperThreading based machines like nforce chipset with amd processors

>>>>>24/96 asio support (well, probably in Dec'2003 ... Jan'2004) -- a good NewYear present?

Sure Eugene this would be a really good new year present

>>>>a new mixer

Good idea .

>>>>multicard asio
>>>>GSIF2 support

That sounds really great

My problems seem to get even more grave with every new release. This time, the computer locks up apon the loading of kxmixer.exe. Assuming that it might be my machine at fault, I'm attempting a fresh install of Windows XP, and going to cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Another hint: I failed to mention that I've had George Breeze's PCI Latency Patch installed on my system. Could this have affected the drivers (and caused those bluescreens i spoke of earlier?).

I'll update following the installation. *Crossing fingers*

No Luck! Fresh install of windows and 3536rc2 locks up on startup. Could this be an error on my end?

I neither can't install 3536rc2 in WinXP-SP1. It does not start. I have upgraded from 3534 and from 3536c, but nothing.

Sad

My computer freezes right after I've had that warning from Microsoft in the installation... I press "continue" or whatever, and wait for 4-5 seconds... freeze. No bluescreen this time however, but i do have to reboot, as the machine stops responding...

But thanks for the effort of writing this new code, Eugene!!

btw, I tried
1. installing 3536 rc2 over previous 3536
2. uninstalling, then installing 3536 rc2
3. clean installing with HT disabled

same result on all... suggestions?

Same here, it locks when loading the driver into memory.

Windows tells me the driver is not digitally signed, I click "Continue Anyway" and 2 seconds later I get a hard freeze.

Driver version works great here

As far as your question tjclarke,
I also have the PCI latency patch installed and I have not had a lock up so far, 'note the "so far". the patch I have is the latest patch, 'v020_beta21' to be exact. Also check, there are new VIA Hyperion 4IN1 drivers out as well, Version 450, that may solve your problem. I checked with some of the forums dealing with the Latency patch, and several people are experiencing the same problems but non of them are using kx drivers so you may want to check other hardware.

as always, great work on the drivers.......Peace

hmm... well
HT/SMP seems to be a real problem -- especially since I don't have a HT/SMP-capable machine

one more chance:
http://kx.maincore.nl/beta/kx281103.rar

this version solves problems with power management (on non-SMP machines)
installation details:
download & extract '3536rc2' (typically, to "program files\kx project\3536")
click 'Quit' to abort kX Setup
replace kx.sys with the one included in kx281103.rar
start 'kxsetup.exe' from the "program files\kx project\3536" folder

if it still causes hangs, try to run monitor -before- executing kxsetup and watch any text strings
(make sure the monitor window is visible, since you may not be able to switch to it if your machince hangs...)

if there are any users with SoftIce installed (or any other kernel-level debugger), please let me know

/Eugene

installed the driver with the most recent kx.sys update, however it still freezes when loading the driver. However, the kx.sys dated November 22, which is included in a rar file with the installation of 3536rc2 lets the drivers load fine.

problem is i'm still suffering from the blue screen problem

Same exact situation as tjclarke here. Still freezes (on boot this time).

kx.sys from kx.rar (dated Nov22nd) works fine, though, and even eliminated sound skipping while scrolling in Internet Explorer for me!

Glad to report that I fixed the Blue screen problem! Apparently it was an IRQ issue with my machine.

Been testing the kX drivers installed as stated above (with the Nov22 kx.sys) and They've been perfect! Great work.

What if you used VNC to connect to one of us (with HT/SMP), and *debugged directly*, instead of *writing new code, waiting for us to download, install and give feedback*?
...just a suggestion.. I know the owner of the machine have to sit standby for rebooting etc...

Same problem here - I'm an HT/SMP "suffering" user too! :-)

I even got MS DevStudio installed, debugging tools etc. (I'm primary a software dev.) ... think I could install the DDK as well...
Just let me know. Or if you've got another idea on more detailed debugging output or whatever...
I'd be willing to assist. (because life without bluescreens is much nicer ;o)

Cheers,

I have the same problem as "altus". System gets frozen after "driver is not digitally signed" dialog. Installation with disabled Hyper-threading doesn't help. The same result. So, I can't even install it. Configuration: Asus P4P800 (i865PE), Pentium 4 2,4c, SB Live.

Guys,

why do we bother with HT/SMP support? Is it really worse to take care of the advantage from hyperthreading technology? What does a audio driver gain from HT? Is'nt it more worse to support for instance Athlon64 capability? At least when Windows64 comes available, we should consider implementing 64bit code instead focusing on HT/SMP.

Thanks and Regards
Malte.
