Mic is muting master volume, why?

I've got an Audigy 1 card, and I'm using the 3536 drivers. I use the Shoot voice-recognition software. I've tried setting up the options in the mixer a variety of different ways but none gets rid of this problem: when I push the key that Shoot has set to toggle 'mic input', my master volume drops to zero (well Inf actually). Shoot hears my voice and responds correctly, but all sounds are muted. To get sounds back, I have to push master back up ... but then as soon as I key the mic, volume drops down to zero again.

I have my mic set up this way: AC97 unmuted on the Recording page, gain > 0; Mic In unmuted on the AC97 page. That's all I've changed from the default arrangement.

Can anybody offer any suggestions?

Ok I figured out the problem for me. This is what I did:

1. After installing the speech recognition engine right click on the microphone on the the taskbar and choose "settings."

2. Click once on "Speech Recognition" so it is highlighted and click properties.

3. Click on "Advanced Speech" at the bottom.

4. Click on "Audio Input" at the bottom under "Microphone"

5. Click on "Use this audio input device" and choose "kX Wave SB0090 10k2 [a400] 0/1." Before hitting ok click on "Properties" and choose "Use this audio input line."

This fixed the problem for me. Hope this helps someone.
