Subwoofer thumps a LOT of air-bad-HELP
Hi , sorry for posting here, but I feel like at home...
Unfortunately I bought Creative Inspire T5400 , and the Subwoofer produces bad whoooooming soundds when played over 50% volume. It sounds like there is too much air trying to come out of the port tube ( not nice). I heard that it could be fixed by inserting a damping material inside or by building a new chasis with a new port tube to fix this and to LOWER Frequency Response by some Hertz? IS THIS POSSIBLE? I wanna keep the sub speaker and build a new construction for in to get a better sound or to use an existing one and insert dumping material inside? WILL IT LOWER FREQUENCY RESPONSE AND BETTER THE SOUND QUALITY? ANY EXPERIENCE?ADVICE? Thanks and sorry again 4 posting here... Audigy2/Kx Marko |

Lower frequencing will make the sub thump a lot more. Higher frequency will make it better.

Hm, hope this makes sense, I'm not all that into the english terminology.
Could you by any chance have connected the poles wrong? So the + pole is connected where the - one is supposed to go, and vice versa? That could result in the kind of distortion you talk about, as the speaker would beat inwards instead of outwards. Probably it wouldn't sound strange at low volume, but when you raise it some thesound could become distorted. |

I think he's complaining about the sub being too loud not distortion.

use a towel in front of the sub. (or the port rather) just don't make it too thick.

some subwoofers can't handle higher volumes well (like mine) and will distort if too loud, same with any type of speaker

Try this- Put the sub on the floor and face it toward the wall- OR put it in the CORNER and face it toward the center of the room-- Or try putting it in the corner with the port facing the corner. If this doesn't help, roll up a CLEAN sock very tightly and stuff it in the port- Fourth order enclosures (a box with one tuned port) usually just use the port to increase the volume but are tuned to increase volumes at a certain octave- or Hz level, usually about 40hz or somewhere around there by using the wave off the back of the driver to double the volume.. The problem with stuffing a sock in the port is that it the sub will be a lot less efficient, meaning it will not be as loud with the same amount of power being applied. Also the driver (or speaker) in the sub box is usually designed to be used in a ported enclosure so it may not sound as good in a sealed or first order enclosure. But I have found that sometimes they sound more even and with out the port noise, even better- You will have to turn up the volume more on the sub to get the same volume with a sock tightly stuffed in the port though.. You may like the way it sounds better, especially if you are in a small room. Edit- here is a page that explains the different types of car audio sub boxes- They are the same in any application, home or car audio. http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxes4.asp All you are doing is turning your bass reflex enclosure into a sealed enclosure by stuffign a sock in it- but it's worth a try.

BWX232 has probably got it right here dude, setting your sub in the right place will make a huge difference. Also this should work, Go to the DSP window and double click the surrounder and check both, use subwoofer output and bass redirection. I find that right there you can adjust your bass frequency to where you need it to be with just the right amount of punch and clean bass. I've got some cheap old altec lansing ATP3's and they sound super good . "with KX drivers" These settings are just not available with the creative "CRAP".....good luck....... OH,,,one more thing.. Take it for what it's worth, but,,,I'm a bass guitarist, and have been since I was 12. I'm now 46. So, try your best to avoid stuffing your rags, socks or old sweaty undies in your speakers. Try the settings and the speaker placements first, and just leave your clothes on. he he he once again, good luck.

Ha- I ended up buying the EXACT same speakers! The Creative Inspire T5400's!
PIC link I bought the LOGITECH Z-640's, but I returned them because I didn't like them at all, the bass was overpowering and extremely boomy.. It was also inaccurate ad "humming" all the time... I forgot all about this thread because I wasn't paying attention to the brand and model STIFA bought.. But after doing allot of comparison shopping I came to the same conclusion. I got the Creative inspire T5400's. The Satellites sound excellent w/ my Fort III 7.1- they sound MUCH better than I thought they would for an 85 dollar 5.1 set of speakers. The funny thing is I don't hear that whooshing air sound you do w/ your speakers. I have my sub underneath my desk, but I set it on it's side so the sub driver is pointing up toward the ceiling and the port is firing out toward the center of the room.. The port is well made and rolled at both ends- I have another pair of much more expensive and louder / lower subs that actually have more of the whooshing sound than these do, but they are tuned to a much lower frequency.. and only the outer part of the port is rolled, the inner part is a flat cut and causes wind noise. If STIFA ever comes back, I suggest you try to set the sub on it's side and try experimenting with pointing the port in different direction.. I actually don't listen to them with the sub turned up more than half way most of the time, because the sat's sound so nice I don't want to drown them out.. Anyway- if you ever read this, let me know how it turns out.. I really like these speakers, and I'm used to listening to Phoenix Gold, JBL, Cerwin, MTX, and my own cutom built boxes. (what I currently have)- not the best, but they are expensive and sound pretty nice, these Creative's are cheap and sound pretty damn nice too, can't go wrong there..
