Startup Wav Cuts out W98SE
Hi all,
Im having an annoying problem that when the PC startups up and plays the Windows Startup Wav during this the sound cutsout for about 1/2sec in the middle of playing it. I had this problem before when i was using the onboard soundcard but i was hoping when i installed a SB Live 5.1 and KX drivers it would go away and it hasnt. My setup is P4 2.6GHz 512Meg ASUS PCP800 Motherboard. Im not sure what to check??and i am really puzzled by this as i would have thought a Pent 4 should have plenty of grunt to play a startup wave. I know during startup there are a lot of things going on which i have minimised via msconfig but no luck. What im concerned about is that i may have a problem in my setup which will come back to annoy me later when im recording heaps of audio tracks. Any suggestions would be appreciated Thanks |

Normaly the startup sound of windows is cut out by some other program accessing the sound drivers. It's not a sound card problem. Other time it's due to windows allocating resorces to other hardware. To be more exact, there's no need to worry about this when recording because your sound card is locked to whatever program you are recording with.

Thanks Nightbreed,
I tend to agree that it is not a soundcard problem as its done same thing with both Live 5.1 and the onboard soundcard, but when u say that its due to Windows allocating resourses to other hardware why should this occur??? My old Pentium 1 233Mhz machine running W98SE didnt have this problem so i am still puzzled, also u said that the soundcard is locked to whatever program u r recording with ??? im not sure what u mean by locked??? does this mean that no other application or interupt can make use of the soundcard when im using it??how is cant windows prevented from re-allocating it to something else just like during the startup process??? Thanks |

Startup Wav
have you run the soundcard on a single IRQ or is it shared with some other devices. look at http://kb.kxproject.lugosoft.com/guide/index.html regs, gerald

it may not be windows that re-allocates the sound hardware… if you have any programs in auto-start that use the soundcard, like wmp's tray icon, or a similiar program that may be the cause… go to the start menu, click run, and type "msconfig" go to the startup tab and see what you have running at startup

I thought that I remember reading in another post, months ago, that it is actually KX starting up, that causes the interruption. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
If you play the Startup.wav after the computer has finished starting up, you will see that KX has no problem playing it. I just turn off the STARTUP sound, small price to pay for the capabilities of the KX drivers. |

Thanks for the help guys,
I have been trying out a few things as its still annoying me and one thing i tried was to reinstall the Creative drivers to see if Kx made the cut out problem worse or not, unfortunately i think it has, however as i ran into all sorts of install problems with creative including a clash with my video card (who knows why this happend!!!!) at one point i could not get the machine to restart as it was saying a problem with video adapter and it couldnt proceed......funny to as i have an AGP Video card, one other thing i tried was the msconfig tool where it allows you to not process the win.ini file or the system.ini file or the startup groups, and when i chose for all 3 not to be processed i got a clear sound but then when i wanted to isolate which of the 3 was causing the problem i found i got all different results i could not isolate one and have a clear sound. Then i noticed that within the system.ini and win.ini groups in msconfig you can change the order of the processing ie move up or down any one of the items ie some for the video some or for the sound card etc could be placed up the list, so the question is which should be the optimal way to have them??? All sound card processing first? or wait till system has settled and have sound card processing last?? Thanks for any suggestions |

sound card processing should be near end of the list (as it is not really important for start-up) and important system processes should be higher up - posted this question in the windows forum here on DH - maybe there will be a more definitive answer there
