dj,

I am a little confused by the setup mentioned here. I understand the concept you are talking about here of using the onboard soundcard to create an input but let me ask this.

Assume that someone has 1 single Audigy 10k2 card. Is there an extra input that can be created to simultaneously work with the AC97 just by adding wires and jacks?

Sorry about the brain cloud...

Doug

Yes Doug, because the Audigy has digital connections where you can connect digital sources like the digital output of your onboard soundcard, thus adding an extra input to the audigy...

Daniel,

I guess what I am trying to ask is if there is another input on the Audigy that I could utilize in my case where I don't have onboard sound.

I currently have a CT4830 S/PDIF connection to the SB0090 and ditto with a CT4780 on the same computer, so I have 6 Mono inputs using KX.

Is there another stereo input that I could squeeze out of the SB0090 so give me 8 Mono inputs with minor wiring and soldering?

Sorry for being so thick,

Doug

yes - the point of this little investigation was to use the extra ADC on the audigy card for analogue ins - i have 6 in with one audigy and my onboard sound

ok in audigy 1 and 2 cards, there is a second, higher quality ac97 chip (ac97 2 in the kX mixer)
enabling this by using the kxctrl commands mentioned in my first post in this thread, leaves the first ac97 codec free for use. Connecting a 3.5 mm jack (or any other stereo input method) to the AUX_IN header on the card, will allow you to use both AC-97 chips at once - 4 mono inputs
add this to any other soundcards you have (in your case to SB Lives, you will have 8 inputs), and you have a multitrack system. Ideally two audigy cards and a live would give you 10 inputs (the limit being the amount of digital i/o available)

Perfect,

Simple enough even for me to understand! Thanks for your work. By the way, can you babysit this weekend so I can get time to do this?

Thanks,
Doug

Well I decided to document the procedure. I don't have a digital camera, but I do have Autocad and a scanner.

I will try to HTMLize the thing, with my less than amateur WEB design skills, since you seem busy enough these days.

I got the adaptor card made and installed in the 'puter, however the following commands:

kxctrl sac97 2 0
kxctrl shw 19 1

give me a "Bad command or filename" response in DOS. It might have something to do with running 3538a, not sure. Anyone got an idea?

Doug

EDIT-------------------------------------------------------------

Well 3538a doesn't create its own folder like prior versions (is that normal?). So, in DOS, I navigated to
C:\windows\system
and try the command, it just brings up the command list for kxctrl and doesn't seem to do anything.

I'm sure it is something simple.

try typing those same commands but using -sac and -shw instead
or type kxctrl --gui
and then type sac97 2 0 and shw 19 1

dj,

after navigating to C:\windows\system
the kxctrl --gui worked.
Now I have to find a working guitar cord to test this out.

Thanks,
Doug

hoky smokes bullwinkle it works!

dj, you get a free pizza dinner if you stop by Minneapolis on your way to Alice Springs.

I should finish up the promised graphics tonight and I'll figure out how to get them to you. Maybe if I post them on my Website you can just right click and download them. That might save an email jam. I'll send you an email with the links.

Thanks for your help,

Doug

glad you got it working, have fun recording - remember the line in on the back of the audigy will have a higher quality than the other inputs… use this for when you need the highest possible quality (vocals etc)

When you have the Audigy and SBLive installed and hooked together properly, you should have 4 MONO inputs available. Doing dj_stick's modification will give you 2 more MONO inputs for a total of 6.

Do you already have the Audigy and SBLive installed and hooked together with an SPDIF cable?

To further complicate the issue, do you have a LiveDrive?

I had some text files prepared that explained how to set up 2 sound cards, hooked together by an SPDIF cable. Someone put them on their Website, but that doesn't seem to exist anymore.

I still have the text files, so if you would like a copy of them, click on my name to send me a Private Message, give me an email address I can use to send them and hopefully you can get that part running.

------EDIT-------

Hold on there Rattler! I just reread your response, you do have the LiveDrive I-someone else jump in here, does that give him 1 Stereo (2 Mono) inputs straight from the LiveDrive I?

Hi!

If there is a LiveDrive on the Live then the AUD_EXT on it is blocked with the drive so no more expandation is possible on this card. You only can hook the Audigy card with a 2-pole cable with AUD_EXT SPDIF out to SBLive´s CD-SPDIF in to use the analog inputs of the Audigy on the Live. But I recommend an other way, normally the LiveDrive should work on the Audigy1 (not on Audigy 2 !!!)too (please someone to confirm this!) and so I would use the Audigy1 as a Master-card (doubles the DSP resources) and hook the Live on it like said above. AUD_EXT and CD-SPDIF pinout could be found on top of this thread.

Greetings!

Yes, I have an Audigy1 running with the Live Drive from a Live 5.1 Platinum works fine. With it I get 5 mono asio recordable inputs= Line In L/R (on back of the card) Aux2 L/R on live drive and the Pre-amped Mic Input on the live drive.

I was thinking of hooking up one of my Lives for an extra pair of inputs. I had 3 Lives (before i got the Live drive) with 6 inputs working before. I tried a lot of different configurations so I got pretty good at wiring them up, Learned how to use kX DSP in the process .

Yes, should be, but check again the Audigy´s serial number to know, whether it´s a first (AUD_EXT) or second (AD_EXT) model, ´cause the pinout of both versions are different.

Hi DJ STICK! I personnally use the kx driver and appreciate yr help with the command line parameters "kxctrl sac97 2 0"
Problem is: a cousin of mine uses the original creative drivers on his AUDIGY1
Could he switch the ac972 in the command prompt as u showed us for the kx driver ... only this time with the creative driver?
-thanks

[silly]? question about bit depth

ok, so it works only with kx (the command line parameters, that is)
But i was checking the bit depth of the recorded files: nuendo2, 24bit depth:

Nuendo and wavelab say "24 bit depth"... i'm puzzled: my audigy1 isnt supposed to record at 16 bit depth?? or is it due to that "ac972" thang....
thanks for answering my "STICKy" question.

ok you may be able to record 24 bit files, but the quality will still be 16 bit. You are just wasting space by recording 24 bit files, just change the settings in nuendo
