A suggestion to Eugene
First if all, let me say that I don't have any programmer skills, I hope that I don't say any crap.
Would it be possible to create a version of Kx drivers that would run, hmm, how can I say, O.S. independent kind, to be used as a DSP, in an *.iso format or something, that would run and load the drivers, without the need of a hardisk or anything, with just a few megs of RAM and a Pentium I, with a graphical interface like the windows version, but focused on the DSP functions. If someone as already had this idea I apologize, I'm a newbie. Also, sorry for any eventual mistakes in my English .Kx drivers rulez! |

What are you talking about. You want kX for DOS? What do you want to do with it?
Strange request. Maybe it was, as the Eye said, just a dream. Pierre |

I guess what he wants is an operating system dedicated to music, targeted to kx drivers that would load directly from a cd and that would use the resources in the computer mainly for music making it suitable to run in older computers...

Maybe I didn't make myself clear... It's not a strange request, it's an idea that you didn't understand. Take this example: suppose you only want to watch movies in your pc. Someone had a "strange" "dream" called GeeXbox (http://www.geexbox.org/en/index.html), that it's O.S. independent movie player, or whatever you want to call it. You just boot a CD with the iso in it, insert the movie and you're ready to go. Sooooooo, I just thought of something like this for kx, where it would boot the same way, splash the interface, plug my guitar or mic, adjust the parameters, and have a DSP ready to use. Something like this wouldn't require a powerful CPU nor much RAM, since it would use the emu10kx chip power. And I could write so much more about this...

Not a strange request/idea at all.
What johnny1982 means is a "embedded PC solution" using a 10kx CL card's DSP as a programmable 'Effect Box'. /LeMury Last edited by LeMury; Sep 13, 2004 at 11:08 PM. |

No one argued that it was theoretically impossible, but it would involve coding additional stuff (like the GeeXbox - it's creators state that it is an "operating system", not just an application).
I don't know why such a thing would be useful and I doubt that E. would ever spend so much time in rewriting everything from scratch, but who knows... |

>>creators state that it is an "operating system", not just an application). Yes of course it has to be an OS. That's the "fun" part. >>I don't know why such a thing would be useful I do. For example; - take a cheap small footprint mainboard like VIA EPIA, - a cheap sblive. - stuff it neatly into a 19" rack - some switches and an LCD display - compile a small lightweight dedicated LINUX kernel + app - boot from a FlashRom/Card or whatever - connect it via Ethernet to a PC for DSP-plugin development/upload and you have a crash free portable freely programmable FX-box with MIDI and sampler capabilities. >>.. and I doubt that E. would ever spend so much time in rewriting >>everything from scratch........ I also seriously doubt that, but that doesn't mean it's a bad or strange idea. Even more so since; - a lot of coding already has been done by Linux/ALSA. So one doesn't has to begin from scratch at all. - there's no need to implement ASIO, GSIF, DirectX, WinMME, ac3 etc. etc. /LeMury |

Interesting ideas.
There is another possibility of making a portable fully programmable dafx processor out of kX. Grab a laptop, buy an external pci board to connect the sound card(s) (since kx doesn't support usb cards afaik). And you get a very compact, but expensive unit. But I'm not very familliar how the extern. pci is connected to the mobo (maybe via usb?) and whether it will actually work with kX. |

could be useful with 1U rack mounted computers… synth/sampler rack
