ac97 onboard - can it be made to support rear surrounds on 6.1?

Heres the setup:

Newly built neo k8n platinum with onboard realtek ac97 sound,
Connected viA optical line to my home theater system (koss 6.1 (ks4190))

Heres the issue:

No sound to rear surround ever under any circumstance.
The supplied utility (sound affect?) doesnt even show a 6.1 setup as a choice and testing under 7.1 fails to emit test sound in any speakers after the first rear surround comes under testin (test of all speakers in a clockwise method from center to left front).

I have tried contacting all the vendors involved, and of course each one says its an issue with the other, so no help there.

This board is supposed to support up to 7.1, so its a little bewildering that it cant seem to handle a 6.1 setup.

This is primarily a game machine, although i will use it to watch a dvd when the main tv is taken up from time to time.

Funds are not available to buy a soundcard seperately just yet (spent that on the home theater system :/ ), so suggestions of that sort really wont help any, although info on a reliable sub $100 card for a future buy might be helpful if this cant be overcome now.

I am looking for technical insight into the problem and perhaps a driver or other software fix if one is available.
