Can't get mic in to work?

I'm trying to record audio with the microphone input with my SB Live 5.1, but all software here on WinXP reading from the mic-in input is just recording what comes out of the speakers, in other words, "Wave recording". How do i switch this from the "wave" input to the "mic" input?
