Nature of Master level

Is it digital in nature or analog? First I thought that it was digital, but why I hear a little hiss on my Audigy2 when Master level turned to max and I'm playing 1 Khz -00001..00001 pseudo-silence WAV file (CS4382 has an auto-off when there is no signal). The hiss is smoothly disappears when I'm reducing Master level.

So, theoreticaly there is no hiss generated on way card --> speakers? (analog connection)

Every electronic component adds some noise, so in your question above,
analog noise comes from D/A converter output stages, analog output opamp(s), and all it's surrounding components in signal path like resistors and capacitors.
Even power lines induces noise.
However, the above noise levels are relative small compared to AC97 input noise level.

Also; some DSP- plugins (like Reverbs) can also cause quite some noise by design.

So by clearing the DSP, loading only Epilog to 'short' the cards default signal paths, you should get the "output noise floor" of the card.

Interesting. Too bad that I need the surrounder.
