New SONAR and kX Setup Guide.

Hi all:

If any more new kX users come this way, I want to let you know that I finally completed writing a guide for SONAR and kX setup. It covers setting up for 5.1 surround mixing in SONAR 4, and it covers converting MIDI tracks to audio for MIDI tracks played back by kX Synth and for MIDI tracks played back by DXi/VSTi.

Look in this link if youre interested: http://goldentee.mysitespace.com/

Oh, I fogot to mention, it's a guide for users new to kX.

Hanz Petrov:

Hi, and it's a nice feeling to know that a kX Project Team member that has been with the kX Project since the old days (like before there was an installer), has taken a look at my work on the guide and made a complement. I really esteem the compliment from you because I see you have done work with the kX DSP effects library, and on the very informative kX Help file. I was also fortunate enough to have LeMury point out some improvements for certain areas in the guide. I've already fixed those areas, I hope. The only kX Project Team members I notice posting in the kX forum is Eugene, Max M, and LeMury, but I've tried to acknowledge you all in some way in the guide under the kX Project Team. Also, I dont know which order to have listed you all's name, so I went with the order shown in the kX About list of thanks. hehe Anyway, it's good to see you Hanz, and I've included your name and title under that section, now. Your Title sounds interesting, so I just had to add it.

Tiger M:
Thanks for stoping by to give this guide a look, heck you could have signed my guestbook. Anyway, I'm hoping to see some action concerning the DSP effects documentation. Cya all around.

please help:

The version of SONAR youre using doesnt have ASIO support. ASIO support was first made available with SONAR v2.2. So users with v2.2 or above should have no probelm following the guide I wrote, except, only SONAR 4 users will have surround sound mixing capability. The Surround Sound feature is a new feature of SONAR, first implemented in SONAR 4.

There is a SONAR kX guide written by kX user admk. The kX DSP setup he uses in his guide should work well with the SONAR version you have. The guide is here: http://www.geocities.com/kxsonar/kxsonar.htm

May I suggest you update your version of SONAR to 1.3.1? It's a free update for registered users. Get it by registering your copy of SONAR with Cakewalk.

LeMury:

Thanks.

Hi stoia:
Try what I've written below: This should work for you:

Double click on k1lt and set the assignments up as below:
Out 1/2= Analog Front
Out 9/10= Analog Rear
Out 11/12= Analog Center/LFE
Out 13/14= WinMM Recording

Now, if you follow the guide that's here:http://goldentee.mysitespace.com/new_page_2.htm
Your Virtual Cable connections would be as below:
-ASIO 4/5 Front L/R to MX6 In1L/In1R, MX6 MainL/MainR to k1lt out1/out2
-MIDI L/R to MX6 In2L/In2R
-Mic L/R to 1st Gain inl/inr, 1st Gain outl/outr to 2nd Gain inl/inr, 2nd
Gain outl/outr to APS Expander in0/in1, APS Expander out0/out1 to 10
Band EQ Inl/Inr, 10 Band EQ outl/outr to MX6 in3l/in3r
-Line In L/R to MX6 In4l/In4R
-MX6 RecL/RecR to k1lt out13/out14, also MX6 RecL/RecR to ASIO
asio4/asio5
-MX6 Send1L/Send1R to Reverb Lite InL/InR, Reverb Lite outfl/outfr to MX6
In6L/In6R
-ASIO 8/9 Center/LFE L/R to k1lt Out11/Out12
-ASIO 6/7 Rear to k1lt Out9/Out10

Let me know if your recording and bouncing MIDI to Audio works now. Unless I'm missing something, it all should work now if you are following that SONAR and kX Guide. The only difference is that k2lt has an extra assignment Out named Out 15/16. The guide has WinMM Recording assigned to Out 15/16 for k2lt, so just assigning WinMM Recording to Out 13/14 on k1lt should make things work for someone using k1lt if the virtual cable connections are adjusted accordingly (as written above).

Thanks for your answer
When you say : also MX6 RecL/RecR to ASIO asio4/asio5
I can't make this connection because there is no asio3/aso 4 on ASIO
with the SB live 5.1 Platinium.

But recording and bouncing MIDI to Audio works now.

stoia:

I have an Audigy, so I cant check/test what youre telling me. I hear that some soundcard models have an ASIO mapping issue (some are the 5.1 10k1 boards). This may be your problem. But, I hear it's possible to find out what the ASIO mappings are for your card by using different connections til you discover the mappings or something like that. What is your soundcard model (shown in the bottom right of kX Mixer) as mine is "SB0092" k2lt [e800].

See this thread, and maybe you can figure out how to slove your problem from posts made there: http://driverheaven.net/showthread.php?t=67887 There are also other threads relavent to the ASIO mapping issue. You can do a search and try to find the other threads.

If you can't solve your problem, keep posting in the kX forums. Someone will be able to help you.

Thanks for your comments about the guide in your post above, and thanks for letting me know that the recording and converting MIDI to audio works now. I will add this info I wrote concerning k1lt to the SONAR and kX Setup Guide.

Goodluck with solving your other problem.

Hey stoia:

Check out post #3 in this thread: http://driverheaven.net/showthread.p...+mapping+issue Actually, you might want to read the whole thread, also note post #7.

It has a link to a guide that might be helpful to you. Also search the DriverHeaven forum for "ASIO mapping Issue," and you should get some good hits concerning the problem. It seems you have to search for ASIO pairs that work for you and use one that works. You may end up having to use a DSP setup that uses the Epilog instead of the ProFX ASIO plug-in, or get another sound card such as an Audigy or Audigy 2.

@Thomas:

Thomas, could you please help me a bit? I have A2ZS and Sonar 4.0.1, reason why I haven't installed kX yet is because I am not sure how to set up things the way I want.
I really want it simple:

I need classic stereo setup.
I need only line-in in 24/96 or 16/48 for ASIO.
I need separate left and right line in channels.

I will attach mic-preamp on left and guitar on right line-in channel and I want to be able to record them separately as two mono sources.

This may not be possible using one Line In, but you may be able to do this. You would have to connect a "Y" adapter to the Line In on the back of your card, and from what I remember, those Y adapters are mono.
You could search for an "Y" adapter that has a 1/8 inch male and two female connectors whatever size you want 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch or RCA connectors (if you can find an adapter that allows you to plug your mic and guitar into RCA connectors, this should more surely work for what you want to do), but I never tried to record the input signals to such an adapter on separate tracks, so I dont know if it will work. However, if you do find a true stereo Y adapter (which sends one of the female connector inputs to the left and the other to the right channel) it's possible to record the two signals coming into the Line In on the back of the Audigy 2 ZS on separte tracks in SONAR using 16/48 ASIO (cause kX doesnt support 24/96 recording yet, as far as I know).

You can inquire at an electronics store such as Radio Shack for the availability of a true stereo "Y" adapter. If you find one,the DSP used in the guide I wrote is OK for what you are wanting to do. Say you use the DSP from the guide I wrote; Really, all you have to do in SONAR is select as a track input ASIO Line In Left (your Mic signal) for one track and ASIO Line In Right (which is the guitar signal) as the input of another track. If you select ASIO Line IN Stereo, that would be both signals on one track. Do you see what I mean? I cant remember the exact names for the ASIO Line In input you select in a track input in SONAR, but I hope you get the idea. It may be just kX ASIO 04 left, kX ASIO 04 right, and kX ASIO 04 Stereo.

Try to find a true stereo Y adapter, and let me know if you want to hear from me again after that? If needed, I can get exact ASIO names for you. I'm using my Internet PC right now, and I would have to reboot to another OS setup that has kX installed on it.

Hey igor:

LeMury has written a new plug-in that allows users to do just what you've been seeking to acomplish (record your mic and Line-In sources (guitar in your case) to separted mono tracks in a sequencer such as SONAR.

I tried it and it works! You can plug your Mic into the Mic jack on the sound card and your guitar into the Line In jack. Here's the thred to see to read about it and down load it: http://driverheaven.net/showthread.p...d=1#post565545

Funny thing isnt it? When you come here seeking help, things happen! Hey who are you anyway.

Edit: Just read a post by LeMury, and though this new plugin will do the job for you, he says that using a Y adapter connected to the Line In is the better way to record your mic and guitar to separate tracks, so using a Y adatpter does work. Also he implied that you should use a preamp for your guitar, too, if you can.

Cya, and let us know how it's going for you? If you have the time.

Hi all:

I've noticed since March 22, 2005, the allowed monthly bandwidth has been exceeded for the site which was hosting the SONAR and kX Setup Guide I've written. I have been searching for a new free host since. I have switched to a temporary new host, but the server is a slow one, yet I have unlimited bandwidth, and an ad free site with this free new host.

Interested users can visit the site for reading the guide by clicking on the SONAR and kX Setup Guide link in my signature. I've already applied for better web hosting with a number of possible hosts. When I'm settled in to a nice place, I'll let you know.

Til I find something better, this slow server will have to do. My opoligies for the downtime, but I thought 1 Gig monthly bandwidth would be enough. I didnt expect the site to get so many hits! I also plan on updating the guide to include the newest 3538 release and the ProFX new releases. I'm glad some of you find the guide worth reading, and I'm glad I could provide something of interest to you.

Cya all around

Hello Thomas, sorry I wasn't around for quite a while.

I have seen ProFX and it is just what I need.

I have a 3.5mm stereo jack with cable connected to Line-In that goes into my custom made breakout box. In the box I have pro-grade dynamic mic-preamp (home made of course) and its output is connected to line in left channel. Guitar has line level out so it is connected directly to the right line-in channel. Now I want to record them both as a separate mono sources (because they are mono anyway) in Sonar. I was just wondering how to setup Sonar and ASIO in kX to get those line-in left and right separated to two tracks in Sonar.

I am just a regular guy with sometimes too much free time on his hands

LeMury's mixer (MX6) is just what I wanted to have long ago and I believe I may have even suggested similar thing earlier, I am glad that someone got the same idea.

Do this and if you have any problems, maybe we can meet on YIM or something, and I'll walk you through it.

Glad to hear it!

I hope to have the guide updated in time to include the new ProFX plugins. For it's the ADC plug in in LeMury's ProFX v2.1b release that makes it possible to use the Line In and Mic inputs simultaneously and record mono signals to separate tracks using your digital audio and MIDI multitrack music production software of choice.

SONAR and kX Setup Guide.

Hi all,

This is probably a futile exercise but I would like to try anyway.

The "New" SONAR and kX Setup Guide is not so new anymore and probably out of the minds of all but the most diehard fans by now but I was hoping there would be at least one user that made the effort to download the guide before it vanished into cyberspace.

I have managed to locate the text but the images elude me.
Has anyone been able to save the images of this guide?
I am trying to recreate it and when successful I would like to repost it on the project site. It is a great resource that I bet can be used with the latest version of Sonar too.

Can anyone help me? Let me know and I will send you my email address in a PM.

Thanks so much,

Caithleann
