sb live 5.1 kx 35.37 popping during ac3 playback

i recently bought a sb live 5.1

it works fine when using the surrounder with music (sounds coming out of all channels due to up mixing)

but when i play a dvd or an ac3 file the sound pops and chops about
im using three y cables (3.5m jack to 2 phono) which connect to my ac3 amplifier.
(ive tried a lot of surrounder options including direct path and movie mode)

the ac3 decode prompt on kx pops up fine and everthing appears to be working.

can anybody shed any light on this?
