passthru and volume question

I just installed the KX drivers, the 57 ones, the 58s are crapola for my audigy2. When I use passthru for dvd movies I think I can hear its real passthru digitalicious sound but my cinema reciver doesnt show its getting a passthru signal.. which it showed when I used the Creative audigy2 drivers. How can I check that it really is a real passthru and all?

Second question, shall I have the main volume at 100%? Ive always heard that the main volume shant go over 50%, after that the sound quality craps out but I read this way long ago, maybe it has changed?
