Getting back into audio apps again, previous Delta 44 user, new to KX

Hello everyone.

Several years back I used to work heavily in audio apps for both work and education (Both PC/Mac) using your standard clutch of applications such as Cubase, Reaktor, Logic.

I lost my old but terrific Delta 44 sound card in last years hurricanes, and have nothing of "professional quality" anymore... or so I thought. I do still have my SB Live! Platinum (with breakout), and I again have ASIO support again thanks to the KX Drivers. However, some things (am I spoiled by my previous card?) have left me desiring more.

One thing that really killed my brain (and lost sleep over) when I first tried these drivers was that I couldnt get any inputs in ASIO. I'm going to assume reading this forum that there is known problems trying to use the default DSP for inputs with ASIO? Still, after browsing this forum I came across some excellent links such as these...

http://thomasabarnes.beplaced.com/sonar_kx_guide.htm
http://members.home.nl/nahutec/kxtutor/quickkx.htm
http://members.home.nl/nahutec/kxtutor/kxtutor.html
http://members.home.nl/nahutec/kxtut...kxcubasesx.htm

... and tailored up a barebones DSP where I have 2 inputs (AC97 LineIn, LineIn2) going into the mixer (MX6?) and then ASIO. It works fine now, but I was just curious at to why I had to do this, let alone for some reason I had to figure out that 14/15 on the ASIO wound up being 0/1 for inputs in Reaktor (???!)

My main (newbie) questions are... is it worthwhile to want to upgrade to an Audigy 2 ZS (I have 5.1 speakers)? Can I just use the SPDIF out from another computer/source for inputs and have digital editing?

Sorry for the long winded post, but I was hoping someone can point me in the right direction at what I can accomplish here. I don't want to spend another $200 again for a Delta sound card.

I wouldn't exactly call it 'known problems'. It's more like that the decision was made to keep
kxmixer+default dsp setup 'multi-media-isch'. (not my first choise I might add..)
Probably under the assumption that 'musos' would automaticly find their way to the
DSP Window were (as you may know by now) all the real 'fun' happens.

>>It works fine now, but I was just curious at to why I had to do this,...
Same answer as above; Almost everything in kX happens in the DSP.

>>let alone for some reason I had to figure out that 14/15 on the ASIO wound up being 0/1 for inputs in Reaktor (???!)
Yes, now this is a real issue or known problem;
..some CL cards (most if not all 10k1 based 5.1 capable CL cards) have an ASIO output mapping problem.
This is hw related, so nothing we can do about it.

>>Can I just use the SPDIF out from another computer/source for inputs and have digital >>editing?
Yes.

Thanks for the reply. I understand then if the goal is to keep the default DSP/Mixer simple for the average user. Building your own setup from scratch is actually kind of interesting, as you only put in what you need and no more.

Does the Audigy 2 ZS (or standard Audigy for that matter) have the mapping issue? Not that its extremely important, but it would be cool to have a -100dB noise floor and 5.1 mixing.

I have a A2ZS plat (sb0350) and I dont have any routing problems. It works as I expect it.

And yes, learning to make DSP configs is what really unleashes KX power.

Also, you get more DSP resources to play with, with an A2.

No, only certain 10k1 based cards. Audigys are 10k2 based.

Did you mean "Au2s"? Au1 have 10k1 onboard, don't they?
