I've got my hands into a X-Fi
Well, I got the chance of testing a X-Fi Xtreme Music this weekend, so far I've only manually installed the latest drivers I got from the site with the device manager, and then installed the 3-mode console from the CD, because the auto-installation is loaded with useless crap.
So far, ASIO at 2ms seem rock solid, running 44Khz-24bit or 96-24. The ASIO output (volume) is very low, I still haven't found a way of solving that... update: It only seems to happen in some ASIO software, in some runs fine, in others runs to low... update: Damn! The software doesn't seem to allow routing line 1 out to line 2 and 3 (3 stereo outputs) update: It seems to like APIC off in my system. http://www.hardwareheaven.com/images/s...big%20grin.gif update: Where can I get the Ad_ext pin diagram for this card? running this card in an A64@2500mhz, 1Gb RAM, MSI K8N neo2 plat. After 65%-70% cpu load I start to get pops and cracks. If there's anything you want me to test, just let me know. Last edited by JGSF; Oct 21, 2005 at 01:10 PM. |

Is vienna 2.4 on the distribution CD? I've heard it is at least compatable with audugy 2's. We've been waiting about (literally) 5 years since the release of vienna 2.3 and it badly needs a makeover! I've heard it's a great improvment over V2.3.

I'm pretty sure V2.4 works with CL drivers+adg (haven't tried tho), but it doesn't work all that fine with kX.
Lot's of crashes. |

I just opened a soundfont with Vienna 2.4 and kx and played it, seemed ok, didn't try to tweak anything though...
If you want to give it a go: (just unpack and run it from the folder) http://ohmeuzamigoz.no.sapo.pt/Vienna2.4.rar ps: I'll probably return the X-Fi, I find it too expensive for now, imature drivers, besides, ASIO performance is equal to Audigy2... You can forget that 1ms asio latency crap they claim (at least at the present time)... hardware asio... yeah right... |

hey, thanks man!
It works (to a large degree) for me (SBLive5.1). Some things don't work (eg modulator routings, looping editor) at least I think. Sometimes it makes strange wavetable sounds (not unpleasant) then comes good by itself. It can definitely edit SF's. The user interface has various improvements. I imagine if everything works as it should, it would be very useful with the X-Fi. As it is, it is worth using in conjunction with V2.3 and wavelab (for its fantastic crossfade looping tools). cheers |

hi,
no I haven't used soundforge, but what wavelab has that's really useful is a crossfade looping tool (which is good for locating a standard loop as well, the loops can be massaged in real time unlike vienna 2.3). It also has a loop equaliser which I havn't explored yet. The crossfade looper can give a useful sampler loop with very little intervention if required. There are various parameters and presets relating to the amount of crossfade time pre and post loop, fade curves etc. Does soundforge offer a lot more? (I think it may). |

Well, my old version of SoundForge V4.0 (or 4.5 ??) - had some limited crossfade loop tools - but I havent played with making Soundfonts since. Was wondering which one to go with if/when I do.
Not sure how things have changed since I have used Soundforge. But at the time wavelab seemed like a kiddies toy compared to soundforge. Also, on my system, Vienna 2.4 does work BUT - I cant save (save or save as) any changes after importing with the sound explorer, this creates an error message but not BSOD. And, the mini soundfont panel makes vienna crash. |
