AMD dual-core and KX
Just wondering if there are any issues with kx and dual-core systems. I planning on picking up an AMD x2 3800 with an ASUS A8N-SLI mobo. I see that there are quite a few hassles over on the Creative forum. I was wondering how kx works with it.
Anybody? |

kX seems to work fine with other multi-threaded CPU's like intel's HT machines (i'm using one now)
so it's probable that it would work

Long as the KX drivers are not built to do a simple detection of HT at which point, the AMD dual cores are being "semi" detected as supporting HT (which it doesn't) at which point, what happens is that it tries to place 2 threads on a single core, causing some pretty nasty anomolies. This can be seen in many programs/games that use the simple detection which is just sloppy coding.
Another HT related problem does something really odd, it basically does what it's saposed to, kinda, it loads both cores to 25% each.. (program thinks it's loading to full 100%) at which point, this also causes nasty results. Only way to find out is to try, and if you run into a problem, set programs affinity to a single CORE to fix the issue (only annoying problem with that, is every time you fire up your computer, you'll have to do that)

A question on topic about KX...
The driver compatability setting - 'SMT/HT ASIO Optimizations' A) Does this ONLY enable/diable HT on ASIO functions (and HT is not used elsewhere withing the Driver)? Or B) does it allow ONLY turning of HT for ASIO (But HT is still used eleswhere in the driver, like winmm, direct sound etc..)? Is there a reason its only affecting ASIO (If not A above) - Is some ASIO apps prone to HT related problems? Also is there any detailed info on the rest of the driver (as well as synth) compatability settings? |

those modes are for improved performance in ASIO, to allow the lowest possible latency. As for problems with apps, i'm unsure
