Question about midi from Sonar to Reason

I just recently started using the kx driver once I had picked up Sonar and Reason, because with the Creative drivers for my SB Live, I could not get decent latency to save my life. I'm loving the kx drivers but I'm overwhelmed with learning the drivers abilities while simultaneously trying to learn my way around Sonar and Reason! Hopefully someone here might be able to answer this query (although it may be more of a Sonar/Reason query really).

Here's the situation:

In sonar I have some MIDI tracks. I want those track to control devices in Reason. I eventually accomplished this a different way (by using the "re-wire" abilities of reason and inserting a "re-wire" device in Sonar) but I still don't understand why my first attempt didn't work. I set the midi track's output to be "kx control CT4760 10k1 [ac00]" on channel 3. I then set Reason to route channel 3 on the "kx control CT4760 10k1 [ac00]" bus to the soft synth I wanted to control, but Reason would never see any MIDI input being sent from the MIDI track playing in Sonar.

Confusing enough yet? Anyone have any ideas at all? I have checked and re-checked all my options in both programs and the driver settings and can't find anything wrong. I'm baffled.

In sonar - you need to set Sonars MIDI TRACK output port to REASON NOT KX COntrol - REASONS device will appears after inserting the rewire device (Reason), also need setting the proper MIDI channel in sonar (same midi track) that corresponds with the reason synth/device you want to send to.

btw..
KX Control is for automating the KX DSP plugins (KX Automation)

also, alternatively - you can sequence IN REASON and just use rewire for syncing the 2 sequences.

Yeah I got it working with the rewire option, I was just trying to figure out how to do it if I didn't have that option or wanted to do it another way. Mostly just trying to learn my way around and all the different configuration options. In reason the only two choices I have for "external control" are kx control and kx uart, so I figured that one of those would be what I would use if I wanted to control reason from another program or sequencer (at least that's what the Reason documentation makes it sound like).

I dont know about cubase...

Ill try sometime - but I find cubase so cumbersome to setup - I loose inspiration before I even record a single note.. lol

A few note about Sonar / reason..

Reasons default 'song' will play in same tempo as sonars sequencer- while this demontrates the ability to sync the 2 sequencers - may throw you off at first... In reason... FILE-NEW - then add what ever synth/effect you need. An select THAT channel (that IS named in sonar btw) After selecting the REASON MIDI output port for that track in sonar. - It is slick how this works.

REASONS environment NEEDS to be saved and RE-LOADED in reason, each time you open the project in sonar - THIS IS NOT automatic. So, notes should be make in sonar what file reason needs to have loaded - in case you forget later.
In other words.. I have an existing Sonar Project... Its got Reason as a re-wire device - after the sonar project loads - it will show the 'RACK' with reason in it - BUT reason wont load or be accessable until I open the rewires synth interface by dbl clicking on it - Now reason loads up - I then have to LOAD a REASON song in reason - with or with out a sequence - just to get the synths loaded in the order that SONAR sees as the correct channel. Its easier than I may be making it sound... but I can understand it throwing some people a curve.

Also...
I dont know if I can do something like:
Rout KX Midi audio INTO reasons FX - Id think its possible, but I havent had the occasion to figure out how - as I dont see how to setup ASIO IN's in reason while its a re-wire device - but I havent looked that hard either. Im more the type to fiddle than look it up when it comes to soft synths.

Reasons FX modules will use up a midi channel - so - you can remote controll just about everything in reason from sonar via Midi CC's - but they arent named in Sonar 5 like they used to be in Sonar 4. You HAVE to reference to the controllers and use the #'s instead. BUT you'll never get 16 soft synths in reason (CPU load prolly to high anyway) controlled by Sonar UNLESS you just sync both sequencers. ALOT of Polyphony can be had this way. I like the Malstrom for cool sounds and a large library to choose from.

Redrum Notes DO show in the drum roll

It seems easier to set up Dr Rex sequences in reson - it funkey from sonar.

Thats all I can think of for now....

NO your not understanding... REWIRE CREATES an NEW MIDI device in sonar - nothing needs to be done in reason (Sonar 5 / Reason 3) - its automatically 'rewired' to use what ever sonars midi track is set to (via midi channel)

Keep playing with it - it will make more sense...rewire isnt perfect also in some respescts (see above post).

Using Reason as a VSTi - might be different..??
