kX Project Status

UPDATED: 30 Jun 2006

hi, guys
as always, "long time no see"

some brief information on project status:
- I'm still too busy with lots of different offline/online activities, so cannot work on kX
- there will be a new 3538 releases - pre-final. no release dates, sorry
- final build will be '3539' to avoid confusion

the new build will have enhanced a2zsnb support (optical outputs and inputs)
due to lack of information, analog input is not yet supported
(if you get any news from ALSA people and linux world concerning this problem, let me know)

I will try to review the bug with master volume, although I cannot reproduce it here

what is NOT expected?
- ASIO 24/96
- EAX

FAQ:

OS support:
1. there will be NO linux support (95% of new code needs to be written)
2. there will be NO MacOS x86 support (95% of new code needs to be written)
3. Win98-based OSes are no longer supported -- it's 2006 already
this includes Win98, Win98SE, WinME
4. we might be support for 64-bit OS since there are chances I get a 64-bit platform soon
5. we will not support any 3-rd party OSes (reactos etc.)
6. there might be support for Vista Beta as soon as I get the CD and a new PC
note that 64-bit Vista will probably never be supported due to code signing

hardware support:
1. we will probably never support newer X-Fi or E-mu hardware
2. I have a2zsnb by hand, it seems to work fine for me (all analog outputs, optical-out, optical-in; no analog in). Creative still does NOT respond to my e-mails and I cannot get any technical specs for a4, a2value or a2zsnotebook; the same for 'noisy a2ex output' issue and 'MIDI attack issue'. however, if some new information becomes available (e.g. in the ALSA drivers), I might fix these issues.
3. as always, NO USB, SBLive24Bit, Firewire, ac97, HDA or any other stuff

what to expect in 3538/3539 final?
- fix for midi channel 10 (drums)
- better a2value support
- better sb22x support
- minor fixes and improvements

future development:
1. I will try to release some parts of the driver opensource, but not the core, since it is covered by CL NDA -- don't ask for the sources, GPL etc.
2. if anything is ever released, it will be available as GPL/L-GPL
3. at the moment kX sources and the SDK can be compiled in VS6 and .Net, but I always use VS6. this may change in the future if requested by kX developers

to our developers:
please send me by e-mail your very recent source code / plugins / effects / skins etc. to be merged with the 3538

to translators:
please download 3538 pre-final when it is out and update your translations accordingly

to people willing to contribute to the project as developers:
due to lack of time, I cannot monitor the forum at all. please find out any other way of communication (livejournal, wiki, another forum, mailing list etc.) and let me know by e-mail -- we will probably need to discuss the future of the project from the programmers' point of view - the ways of making it partially opensource, new features, SDK features and so on

special note on e-mails:
some of them get lost due to a spam filter. so, if you haven't received a reply, this does not mean your message was ignored.

Eugene

Oh, that's fine. The new year 2006 has begun.

I hope that Eugene will release a version before our Chinese Lunar New Year on Jan 29. Then, I might be able to translate and present it to people here as a Chinese New Year gift from Eugene (& Moi ).

kX project status

Happy New Year to all in the kX community!

Good that we finally get an update from Eugene on the kX status, even though I am clearly disappointed that the 24/96 support will probably never arrive. I still hope that development will continue and that this will be implemented some time in the future by other talented coders.

For us musicians I would love to see a GUI similar to the APS E-control, but for more advanced users there could be an option to work in the DSP window like with kX today.

Just one question for Eugene: Will 24/96 ASIO work in playback mode only in 3538 final?
It doesn't need to be optimised for high performance or to support recording.
Even just 24/96 [2+2] playback at "horrible" 40 or more ms will be more than enough

For the 3538i bug with Audigy2,I found out using the old 3538h kx.sys to fix the no sound / noise issue.
It works fine this way.

Hi aRIEF!

The low noise guitar preamp cannot be used as a DI-Box, since it´s output is non-balanced. With a second op-amp you can balance the output and then use it as a DI, but you also can buy a commercial one, they´re even cheap to get. If I have a bit more time, I should post a DI-schematic and layout... will see.

Well looks like this is goodbye then, I just arrived. Everything I needed (right now in time) you are not planning support for. (Audigy 2 zs notebook and 24/96 asio support) I spent alot of time figuring out this wouldn't work, just to come here and see this lol. I guess it's a hard learned lesson for me. Anyway, best of luck to the future of the program, and if I decide to make some crazy routings with some old desktop cards in future I may be back. So anyway, thanx and keep up the amazing work with the driver, nice that you have created something making whats already around so much better.

g'night

Ok, this isn't an attack or something but....whar are those drivers good for? It's really a serious question. As far as I can see they don't give me anything the original Drivers couldn't. Ok, there are some nice apps built in, but those I can get as freeware as well. Many things are buggy or not working/supportet and I guess there is a much greater group of programmers needed to keep KX up to date and bugfree. So what is the common sense of this Project?

It depends on how you want to use your sound card. If you have a 10k1 based card, then there is no ASIO support (low latency/real time recording) offered by Creative at all. There are hardware effects/plugins not offered by Creative, as well as the ability to create your own (again this is hardware based (in the DSP of the sound card), which means no CPU usage). Additionally, with kX you have advanced signal routing possibilities, that again, is not possible with the Creative driver.

kX also supports MIDI automation for nearly every DSP plugins, as well as GSIF2. I cannot find any other freeware can make a 10kx card supports these features.

I know with creative lab's drivers, you can't be in the middle of a project, get stuck for a certain sound you need. Throw open a text editor and create a quick plugin, or filter. Then load it without having to restart your recording application.

I'd also like to see a set of creativelab drivers that are bug free.

But for the flexability kx gives for it's asio engine is a great plus.. offering many ways to use the engine then what creative gives. gsif is a nice feature, however, now adays even apps that required it allows rewire. But I still prefer to use gsif if it's there.

I also think the drivers take a more minimalistic approach then anything. And to be honest, I've had KX up and running on 2 machines, and yes I play games with them... but I've not had any more or less problems then I would with creative's ones.

And one thing you have to ask... When it comes to doing anything creative, music, art, etc... the biggest killer of ideas is the amount of time it takes to setup. How much time does it take to set a up KX recording session vs a creativelabs one. Personally, by the time I got done scouring for vsts and fiddling with creative's way of routing, I'd already lost what I was going to do. KX... I route and go.. it's that simple....

Will there be any improved decoding of AC3 via spdif input in the minor improvements? Currently the decoding method is really slow and leads to a noticable delay between on screen events from an external source and the sound through the speakers via analog. Thanks.
