"Digital output only" makes a slight sound difference?

I plug my Cambridge soundworks 4.1 speakers into the single "Digital Output" of my SB Live using this DSP setup (Out 1L/1R="digital Front", Out 2L/2R="rear"). In experimenting yesterday I noticed that turning on "Digital Output Only" on the k1lt seemed to change the sound slightly. It seemed to not have as much bass response.

The reason this puzzles me is that I'm only using the Digital Output jack on the SB Live, so how could toggling the DOO switch affect the sound?
