Fix for crackling/popping and low audio quality

I found a nice tidbit from a sticky on the Creative forums, from a solution to stutting/crackling/popping sound.
Go into the Device Manager, under 'Computer', if your CPU is listed as 'Uniprocessor PC' do the following (although this cannot damage your hardware, there may be incompatablities with your certain configuration. Do this at your own risk!).

Right click on it in the Device Manager, select Update Driver. If it asks you to connect to Windows Update to find new drivers select 'No, not this time' and continue.
Select Install from a specific list or location and continue, select "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface and Power Interface (ACPI) PC". Once the new driver is installed it will ask you to reboot, do as it says. Once your computer has started up and logged on, it will once again update the hardware and prompt for a reboot.
Not only did this fix the crackling and popping on my Audigy card, it did the same for me onboard audio and also gave me the gift of crystal clear sound.
It's work a shot, at least.

There is some info about ACPI in the kX FAQ.

ACPI is normally installed by default on most modern computers, however things like legacy devices (ISA cards, etc), can prevent ACPI from being installed.

The link to the Steinberg info in the FAQ appears to be broken. Here is similair info (although it is about removing ACPI as opposed to adding it):

BTW: I thought I should mention that enabling ACPI on systems that do not support it is not recommended.

Ahhh - so enableing ACPI in XP = more IRQ's, as long as Mobo supports it... gotchya.
I'll leave mine on - as I have 24 IRQ's and still some shared...
