Soundblaster Live Drive II & Audigy 2..

Knowing me this is in the wrong place so feel free to kick/move/edit to where it should be... I had a soundblaster live (CT4760) with the live drive II front panel, I recently bought an audigy 2 (its says audigy 2 in gold writing, and has a joystick/midi link cable, and gold sockets if that helps - I cant see the number at the minute) and obviously I would like to know if I can use the front panel? the cableconnections look the same, but.......
Now, I have read some of the threads, and looked at the pinouts, but to be honest, I know as much about making a cable up as a monkey knows about piloting the space shuttle. http://www.hardwareheaven.com/images/s...big%20grin.gif
can you actually buy such a cable? or is it easy to make one? I can use a soldering iron without burning myself (much) any help greatfully received, but remember, my eyes have already glazed over reading some of the threads.....

thanks.

I think its like an IDE HDD cable -

I have an A2ZS Plat - thats what my cable looks like. But I think the FP stuff is a bit different.

I would try that first before buying one anyway - or at least investigate that possibility further.

System Specs

the live drive II and the audigy 2 are incompatible

inbetween the audigy 1 and 2 they swapped over to a new header format. You may be able to re-wire some of the connections, but only the digital/midi i/o would work. Because of the different samplerates of the card and hte drive, analogue i/o will not function

EDIT: in the audio tech forum here there is a sticky thread with the AD_EXT pinout, there is also a comparison somewhere in that thread as to which pins on the Audigy 2 go to which pins on the Live Drive. You don't need to solder anything, just a lot of those 2pin/4pin audio cables (you'll need to re-pin them in different orders though)

so reading between the lines, i would be safer off maybe selling both cards as they were (live platinum with live drive II panel + standalone audigy 2) and just buying a complete audigy 2 package? I looked for an audigy 2 panel, but it was needle in haystack time, and creative want £80 for one

Dr Who,

What do you mainly do with your sound card(s): Record music, listen to music, games?

Everything from remastering audio, games playing, DVD watching, etc etc.. the reason I bought the Live was I do use all the I/O's on it, even the optical

I have a small studio, and we use it for demo tracks and other MIDI based stuff, sort of like a "scratchpad" before we move over to the ProTools machines...

2nd thought, I could I suppose install the original live as well, (run both cards) but that's just a quick fix really, and may lead to conflicts..

budget restraints don't help either..

I am not sure what conflicts you are talking about. You can install both cards in the same system with no problem. Hook the 2 togther (CT4760 and Audigy 2) with an S/PDIF cable and you should have at least 6 analog inputs available for recording.

I was thinking that maybe the 24 drivers would conflict with the older cards? suppose I dont have anything to lose by trying them http://www.hardwareheaven.com/images/s...big%20grin.gif I'll give it a go tomorrow, and post back the results..

Ok, the story so far, is that I have simply put the live! card back in and after a little fiddle about in the control panel, I can use the front controls as before, and after spending a bit of time resetting all the ASIO drivers on all the soft synths, I have just realised that if I try the kX drivers, I am going to have to reset them again... (there are over 40 of them )

so.. last bit of advice, as the latency settings seem fine using the audigy 2's drivers, and I can use a desktop shortcut to change the audio over if I want to use the front panel headphones/microphones etc, is there any advantage to installing the kX drivers? or would I be better off just leaving things alone?

I tend to stick to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school of thought... http://www.hardwareheaven.com/images/s...big%20grin.gif

Well, if you were to use a host for the soft synths - there shouldn't be a need to change all their settings - they inherit the 'tracks' setting in a host such as sonar - Id suspect in Cubase also.

I've switch drivers a few times and never had to do this except for 'stand alone' synths.

So if you have Sonar - GET KX for sure. Theres much fun and power hidden that lil ol DSP - that creative seems to have choked off. But maybe I'm just partial.

I use Cubase SX3, but a lot (about 80%) of the synths are "standalones" and they get used as such... I may just try the drivers, as I did use them on the last PC a while back, and some of the standalones are not too happy at the moment...
