5.1 ...SB0090 10k2 [C800]

my first question, just to start off, how does 5.1 supposed to sound? all speakers at same detail? or 3 front speakers same but more detail than the rear speakers?

I think that generally you will find that the rear channels are utlized less than the front channels, but I think that is mainly because that is where most of the action is talking place (i.e. on a TV/Monitor/Movie screen in front of you). I do not think that there is any "supposed to sound" aspect to it, other than the sound should come from where ever it's position is in the surround image. For surround sound, it should first be calibrated to match the placement of your speakers to best recreate the sound image in the environment that you are in. Generally the center channel is used to help maintain the front-center position when the listener is not located directly at the front-center of the screen. It is often the same content that is present in both the front left and right channels.

In addition to Russ' post...

(Sorry I dont know what a SB0090 is)
With my A2zs (SB0350) - And a custom config for the DSP - Using Prologica - TV is 'decoded' and surround effects are fantastic. (Start Trek TNG for instance - has the low rumble of the ships engines in rear channels constantly - where dialogs are in front as expected.)

DVD movies on the other hand - I use FFDSHOW DIRECTSHOW FILTER and set up dolby decoding in that - again - sounds fanstastic. Better than my (albiet older, non DTS) HT receiver from Yamaha in my living room. (Speakers make a big difference of cource) More dynamic response - just going from my hearing, no real testing with equipment tho.

You CAN set up KX to send same content from fronts to rears if you like.

Winamp has never sounded so good now with HARMONICGen plugin - to boost lows.
Sometimes I use prologica there too - but some songs wont sound right 'upmixing' to surround - while some songs sound AWESOME! - COPY FRONT to REARS always sound GREAT no matter what song.

Using FFDSHOW with winamp (forcing MP3's to use DIRECTSHOW -like MPG files do) is another good way to upmix music to surround - but like with prologica - some songs just dont sound right when I do - AND winamp will crash if I accidentially try to play a WMA file this way.

Also, I have found that surrounder - while good for 'general purpose' upmixing (like wimamp - seems less affected by what song is playing - its more 'consistant') - its not the greatest for surround decoding (TV / DVD) compared to what Im using now as a DSP config/FFDSHOW.

Maybe I havent played with surrounders settings enough (there s a few to playwith) ?? But I love all the controls FFDSHOW provides also.
