On the first run of Spybot-S&D, you will get a few of warning boxes - Check in each box and hit 'OK'.
If you have a program such as KaZaA installed on your system running Spyboy-S&D will cause the program to no longer work. Such programs are spyware dependent, typically one wouldn't want these types of programs on their systems anyway. iMesh will also not work as it requires its spyware to remain on your system. If this is your first time installing Spybot-S&D you should get a configuration wizard, if you've had Spybot on your system previously you may not get the wizard. Some of its options we don't need right now and can be setup later.
Here's the first step of the configuration wizard - you should create a backup of your registry, but it is not necessary. If you choose to backup your registry, you can restore it if Spybot causes any problems on your system. Click "Next". It is recommended that you "Search for updates" to get the latest protection. Click "Next".
"Immunize" prevents spyware form being installed on your system from thereon out, for now just hit "Next" - we'll get to Immunize in a bit.
This is the final step of the configuration wizard, it contains several options, but we don't need those, so just select "Start using the program".
After starting the program you will be brought to the "Updates" section of the program. If not, just click "Updates" on the left of the program and then click on "Search for updates" on the top. This should bring up a list of updates that are available - you should check all the updates and download them. If there aren't any updates available, you should see the following screen:
Check and download any and all available updates, then select a mirror to download them from. (A mirror is an alternate location on the Internet to download a requested file from.) The primary mirror is usually too busy to use, so just select a mirror closest to your location. Then "Download updates" and wait while they download. The download may take sometime depending on your connection speed, so give it a few minutes. The program may appear to be frozen while it downloads the necessary updates, but it's most likely not - if the download takes too long you may want to choose a different mirror
If you downloaded all the available updates now you can Immunize your system. On the program's left there should be an "Immunize" button. Clicking on it will take you to the "Immunization" section of Spybot. As noted in the picture below, if you have spyware on your system you will see a count of how many objects were "Immunized" on, as well as other possible spyware objects. After clicking "OK" on the window, on the top left portion of the program you should see a button called "Immunize" with a green cross next to it - click on that button.
You will now see that Spybot has blocked all of the known spyware on your system. Leave this screen alone, as everything should be good to go. Spybot will now prevent spyware from being installed on your system, however, it will not prompt you about every little thing that is blocked. On the upper left corner of the program you will see the "Mode" pull-down button. Click that and select "Advanced mode" to enable Spybot's advanced features.
A warning promp should appear now, click "Yes" to bring the program into "Advanced mode". This allows Spybot to better protect you computer system against spyware.
On the menu bar at the left of the program's interface, you should see three new options, (towards the bottom). "Settings", "Tools" and "Info & License". Select "Tools".
This will bring yet another menu bar with options on it to choose from. Only two are important. Click "IE tweaks".
In the new box you want to select "Lock Hosts file read-only as protection against hijackers". "Hijackers" can take control Internet Explorer and its Hosts file. So, if you try navigate to a particular website, you will instead be taken to a spyware or Hijacker’s site, possible even a pornographic one. Your Homepage might also be changed as a result of a "hijacking". This type of spyware can also download files to you computer and or add websites to you Favorites without you knowing. Those sites are also usually pornographic in nature.
On the program's left click "Resident" in the menu.
