Inaccessible DVD-RW on new build

I have just built the following:
ABIT KN8-Ultra socket 939 with latest (v1.4) BIOS
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
1gb Crucial
250gb sata2 seagate drive
GeForce 6600GT
Windows XP Professional (sp2 slipstreamed) + latest nVidia drivers

On the 2nd IDE interface I put:
Master - hp DVD Writer 630c
Slave - LG DVD-RAM

I was able to boot from the hp DVD writer to install Windows xp sp2. I proceeded to put on the latest nVidia drivers, etc. However I find that although DVD drives appear in Windows Explorer, I am unable to access the hp writer - it normally reports 'invalid function' (right-click and eject works!). I know the drive works fine (if I put it into my old machine there are no problems). The LG drive runs fine.

Are there are likely causes for this - i.e. MB. nvidia drivers, etc.?
(When I installed Windows I selected 'NVIDIA nForece Storage Controller (PATA, PATA+SATA RAID required)' as I plan to add some RAID functionality in shortly

When I get some more time I'll try putting it on a cable by itself on a different interface.

All thoughts much appreciated.

Obvious things to check would be the IDE cable and the jumpers on each drive, is it reporting the drive properly in the BIOS. I admit it does seem strange that you can eject the drive from Windows.

after checked that.

try going into Device Manager, click to expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives node, then R-click each drive and select "Uninstall", then redetect them using the Scan for hardware changes at the Action menu.
or, you can close the Device Manager and reboot your computer, Windows will redetect the devices and installs drivers for them.

optionally, remove all third-party CD/DVD-writing softwares that installed on the Windows system first, then re-install these softwares after you have completed the above steps.

I did a variety of tests, including using a different ATA cable, reversing the roles (master, slave) and also using cable select.

The best I combination was: LG DVD-RAM as master and the hp as a slave - but even this proved unstable. A firmware update to the hp didn't help either. Nor did I have any CD/DVD writing software installed in Windows at that time.

For whatever reason the hp drive seems to be incompatible with the other components in my machine. I've now replaced it with an NEC DVD-RW which works a treat.

The hp has returned to an old machine (where it's a slave to a HDD on the same channel) where it seems reasonably content.

I think the HP drives are set up that they will only work as a slave. At least they used to be.
