AGP Slot run its course?
What you peeps think? with the new highend cards comming out, and faster hotter GPU,s... will mobo manufactuers have to find a better way to implement a sollution for this prob?
After all... how much of a heatsink can you hang off of the AGP slot without blocking PCI slots, and then haveing to resort to leaf blowers to cool the GPU. Your input |

Cooling will eventually need to be updated, but my take on this is that the problem with most manufacturers is that the cpu/vpus/gpus or complete systems are badly constructed. When comparing the ATI 9700 to the upcoming GeforceFX, you can see that it is possible to make a fast product, with a lower frequency (ATI) that emits less heat. Then again, if you compare AMD vs Intel, the Intel chip is a lot cooler, but is clocked higher and is slighly larger in size. I would personnaly like to see watercooling becoming slightly more mainstream than it is presently.

Well, PCI-X was supposed to come along with Hypertransport with the new AMD mobos, but its going to be limited to server-only stuffs for the moment, as far as I can tell...

The problem with cooling isn't caused by the AGP slot itself, it's caused by the card. Now, I am not a fanboy by any stretch of the imagination (I have no preference between ATi and NVDA), but the GeForceFX seems to be to be a poor piece of engineering. NVDA is acting like 3DFX -- instead of making a GPU with finnesse or graphical elegance, they just made a brute force chip. This reminds me of the Voodoo 5500 and 6500 --

Personally I think that they should start putting GPUs on top sides of the cards. Makes cooling easier and gives you more space to implement cooling options.

The AGP slot positioning would seem to favour that! - no idea why they never reversed it to start with. At least the choice of a reversed or a non-reversed would be useful. |

Amen it would much easier to properly cool your card if all the parts were on top they should put ram on top also (I've added mini heat sinks to my ram and it gets tight cause the damn cards up-side down.

Oh, thanks for the correction, Craig. I knew I meant Voodoo 6000.
![]() Anyway, in case you guys missed it, here it is, in all its ridiculous glory: By the way, this card needs an AC Adapter.

acctually it doesn't need an ac adapter, I have modded mine to run off the psu and it runs fine off my 350 watt. I think they were just being overly cautious in case people had very weak psu's.

HERE HERE!
I am glad that I am not the only one that think that having the core of a video card UNDER the card seems retarded! Which way does heat travel? Up or down? UP! INTO the PCB... now if the core was on the other side of the PCB... the heat would be able to travel straight off of the chip! Also with the core being on the other side of the PCB, that would give more room to install slightly larger HSF due to the fact that the PCI slots/cards are no longer in the design scheme. Makes perfect sence to me... |

No, looks like AGP to me WarGun
![]() Yeah, I was wondering why they don't make the cards with chips on top for a long time too . . . . . . then I just turned my tower upside-down
