Thumbs Up! Siemens SpeedStream 2604 4-port DSL/router

Man, I hate it when you can't direct link to a product on a manufacturers website at times like this...but you can find it on this page at Siemens, but the blurb is basically:

SpeedStream 2604 Features and Benefits
-Four 10/100 switched ports for LAN access
-Firewall protects your home/SOHO network
-Network Address Translation (NAT) support
-Built-in print server
-VPN pass-through makes connecting to the office network a breeze
-SpeedStream® browser-based configuration wizard guides setup and operation

Now it's just a bunch of buzz-talk to me, the thing for me was I was having a nightmare getting me DSL hooked up and everyone and their mother had been telling me to just get a DSL/router and forget about me troubles....trouble was I was stuck in the house with the kids all day and wanted it fixed NOW! I found this model on sale online at me local Circuit City, (or you can buy it online too), for $29.99 and just couldn't pass up the chance to grab one last night about 2 minutes before the store closed. I'm glad I hurried, it was worth it.

I don't know much about networking except it confuses me and gives me headaches, but I do now know something about DSL/routers...I LOVE them! I plugged everything in, powered everything up according to instructions, reset me TCP/IP addresses back to "detect automatically" on all me rigs, and it worked.

It worked, it just freaking worked great!

I was stunned, it's just too easy. All me 'puters have full net access going fine, I can see and share files on all of them, me FTP is working as is e-mail, and I can still print from all me 'puters on the network. Honest to god, all I did was swap out me old linksys 4-port hub for this new piece of networking magic and it took all me problems away.

I haven't had a lot of time to play with advanced configurations yet, but I've poked around the menu and liked what I saw. It has some very advanced control features and oodles of logging features that are very detailed.....MUCH better than the crap software they sent me to use!

I'm now officially another firm believer added to the ranks of DSL/router bliss. If you're going to get broadband, get a router! That and for only $30 at a national chain it's an unbelievable deal....not to mention that Circuit City also has a 2-port model of the same DSL/router on sale for $19.99! (If I only had one rig, I'd be damned tempted to pick that up just to link up thru it for the firewall and advanced connection features. Me LOVES the "no headache" magic that's built in!!!)

I read some pretty scathing user reviews of this product before I picked it up, so I was a little leary. I was going to go for the pretty much gold standard of a linksys 4-port DSL/router since they apparently are about the best out there. But the best out there was going for $80 at me local Circuit City, and this $30 DSL/router is just spiffy to me so I thought I'd put in a good word for it.

If you're wanting to give it a try, you really can't go wrong for the price. Heck, price aside I like this router...being able to actually run out and pay real cash money for it and get it in a hurry was just the cherry on the sunday for me!

Cool! Dumb interesting fact.

Ever since I installed the router me 98se/XP networking problems have disappeared! I used to sort of hate running in XP since it took it SO darn long to find anything on any of me other rigs thru the network, there was a lag whenever I went to look at directories/drives on the network...like 45 seconds to a minute and a half each time I looked at something on the network. Too 'yuck'!

It's gone now, just gone. Using the network from XP is just like using it from 98se for me now, it's all just THERE! Ok, mebbe there's a second or two glitch the first time I try and access it...but a sec or two is a HUGE difference than a minute to me.

Just another cool bonus from me $30 bargain fix. I'm gonna head back to CircuitCity today and pick up the 2-port version for $20 for a buddy who's having trouble getting the DSL software to work on his box. He only has 1 PC right now, but the damned router will pay for itself just getting rid of his connection hassles and acting as a firewall.

Me LIKEY-LIKES this cheapy router! VERY nice.

System Specs

AWSOME

Yup,

I too was fed up with the problem of swapp'in my cable between my two computers in my room to get internet on one for a couple of minutes, I then took the trip to my local curcuit city... To my wonder my prayers were answered by this "small peice of networking magic". Now Im not a networking genious, thats why Im still in school for it, but I know a lot about it. This Router has been THE best networking purchase I have made in a long time.

speed steam 2614 ... Mine has the built in printer network as well.

I highly sugest this router to anyone!

(Oh, and to tute the genious horn... "Great minds think alike"... )
