problem reading/burning DVD/CD

I hooked up a NEC ND-3550A on IDE using the 80 conductor/40 pin IDE cable at the middle connector on the primary IDE. My only hard drive is on SATA. The DVD/CD drive is the master, no slave present. Read operations "freeze", like nero reads and windows media player. CD burning has a very low success rate. I didn't try DVD. I then bought a BENQ DW1655. Same problem. I then connected the drive to to the end connector on the IDE - no improvement. I have bios 201. Any tips? ( I am able to read data CD's and data DVD's).

the middle connector of the cable is for Slave setting device,
the end connector of the same cable for Master device.

first, remove Nero software and then shutdown and turn off your computer.

then reset the new BENQ drive's jumper to Master and connect it to the end connector of the IDE cable, leave the other end connector at the same IDE controller. also recheck all cables.

leave the old NEC drive out for now, as for testing.

then restart your computer and reinstall the Nero, and try again, and see what happens?

Did all that - still no improvement.

you might want to verify whether or not the same problems still exist after you have done a clean install of the Windows and rest of software on the system. remember, you want to leave all Windows settings at defualt at the time of checking on this.
If problems still exist then it is time to move onto hardware diagnosis.

The problem was that the IDE device driver was set to PIO only. I don't know why. I changed it to DMA and all started working properly. Thanks for the follow up.
