Anyone for I - Ram

I just read an article about I - Ram by Gigabyte, and the idea isnt a new one, and in fact it uses the PCI slot, but I was disappointed to see that it moves data through the SATA 150 interface, now that means its fast right, but not as fast as it could be. Maximum PC tested it and declared it briliant, but would or does any of you consider using this type of interface even with a rechargble battery? http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2480

I'd personally wait for a DDRrive X1. Similar idea except it uses a PCIe slot for bandwidth So 2.5GB/s or whatever the PCI 1X slot uses. It will also use a external AC adapter for powering. No info on release date though http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=28647

The i-ram is just too expensive. $200CAD for just the card, than another $300-$400 for the 4GB. So up to $600CAD just for a 4GB hard drive? I think not.

I will wait for the flash hard drives that are due out soon. They are suppose to basically have a ram drive at the start of the drive so a 4 gb flash with a 80 gb regular drive.

so what, that'll be like a huge cache? sounds good! the iRAM looks nice but like lowfat said, not economical.

If you actually read the article you would have noted that the card does not use the PCI1X bus to transfer any data.

Quote:
Although the i-RAM plugs into a conventional 3.3V 32-bit PCI slot, it doesn't use the PCI connector for anything other than power. All data is transfered via the Xilinx chip and over the SATA connector directly to your motherboard's SATA controller, just like any regular SATA hard drive.

By the link he provides it looks as though the DDRive X1 will be a competitor for the I-Ram and run off the PCI-E X1 slot instead of the regular PCI and SATA. The DDRive will also support 8GB total RAM.

if you actually read my post you would have noted I wasn't talking about the I-Ram.

By "PCI 1x" I thought you were referring to a regular PCI slot and not a PCI-E 1x slot , as in comparing the PCI-E interface of the DDRive to a "PCI-interface" on an I-Ram. My bad!
