So I want to flash the bios on an asus mobo using their EZ Flash.

I made the floppy, set up the system, checked post and all was ok, then reset and hit Alt + F2 as per asus instructions.

this is where it all goes wrong. Every time I hit alt+f2 (which I do as soon as I've pressed the reset button), the comp spins up, but the monitor doesn't come on and the nice bios lady doesn't talk to me

if I hit reset then wait any length of time to press it doesn't do anything and it just tries to load an os.

I tried a variety of different 'press methods', until suddenly the lady told me the "System failed due to CPU overclocking".

I pulled the cmos battery, reset, and all is well again.
except I still can't flash the bios.
In every other way the comp is in champion working order (seemingly).

alternatively you should be able to update the BIOS after booting DOS with a DOS-based BIOS flash utility for your motherboard's BIOS.
unless you don't want to update the BIOS this way, or you can't do that with your motherboard?

Try the asus update tool, I flashed my bios to 1009 using it and it worked fine

many new motherboard these days have a built-in BIOS (and implemented firmware...) flash tool,
the maker of these motherboards are usually recommended the users to update the BIOS with the built-in tool.

but if you cannot use the tool and still use a floppy drive, you should consider programming the BIOS via the DOS-based BIOS flash utility for your motherboard's BIOS over the Windows-based tool...

anyway, try resetting the BIOS to default, changing the keyboard to a PS/2 if the one you're using is an USB... and try using the BIOS flash tool again?

and if i were you and after tried all that and still not working, i would return the motherboard for exchanging to an another one...

I reset the cmos and bios and tried again twice, but still the same deal.

and the problem I have is that I only had one working comp aside from the lappy(doesn't have fdd), and well, won't bore you, but basically I have a floppy with a .ROM file on it suitable for the ezy flash thingy, and no way atm to create a DOS boot disc.

so you already have a floppy disk and your system has a floppy drive?
you just don't know how to make a DOS boot disk, nor where to get it? or what?

I know how to create a boot disc and all, but the system who's bios I'm trying to flash has no OS at the moment, because I can't install XP until after I flash the BIOS.

So the only other working system in the house atm (the one that I made the floppy with the ROM file on) broke right after I made my fd. I went to take the fdd to plug into the system that I'm trying to flash, and the mobo just came to bits


So. now I have a floppy with a rom file on (not a dos bootable floppy I don't think), but suitable for the EZ flash thing that doesn't want to work.
and, the one comp in my house that worked with fdd, broke.

and I'm online now on what is actually our server that I stuck a gf card in.

and I'm kinda losing the will to live.

ok, so you just wanted me to tell you where you can get a DOS boot disk then?

how about check with one of your friend to see if he can make one for you, or stop by one of your local computer stores and ask them...?
or go to bootdisk.com/ and D/L the boot disk image creator file for "Driver Free Disk For Bios Flashing", and then use the downloaded file to create the disk from one of your friends system, or in an internet cafe' system or something?

now, if you don't know how to flash your BIOS in mode DOS and by using a DOS-based BIOS flash utility, then check your motherboard web site to see if you can get the utility tool for you motherboard's BIOS and how to use it...

asus has a couple of diferent ways to update & not all are viable with each bios update. did your particular update have any special install instructions?
panging along with everyone else has given you good advice. if none of this works call asus support & order a new bios chip. newest rev of course.
