exclamation A friend wants to blow $300us to improve his PC...I need advice.

Now normally I'd just laugh at the guy, but this guy is a REALLY good friend....the 'bail me out of jail and save me arse in a few barfights' kind who I've know thru orchestra since I was about 8. So I'm going to make this guy a gaming PC with whatever his budget is even if'n I just flat-out sell him Bubbles for 3 bills.

He keeps wanting to send me system stats, "to see if anything is salvageable"; but it's a P233 so I pretty well know in advance the answer is "no!" no matter how much I'd like to cut corners.

So, what to do.

Well, we have it all arranged now where I'm gonna send him a parts list and he's gonna order whatever wherever I tell him. He'll have all the parts delivered to him, then when he gets 'em all he's gonna bring 'em on down and we'll put it together together. (He wants to, bonus points to him for wanting to learn. ) Once together, I'm gonna let him borrow Bubbles for a week while I set up his box and then we'll swap back as soon as it's ready. (Hey, it's not an all together bad plan....I won't be able to play on Bubbles anyways the week I'm working on his box, and it'll give him a nice taste of things to come. )

So......

I'm coming up blank, TOTALLY blank on where/how to get started on this. Me and Mad's are recovering from our flu, but we both still ain't up to speed. Nothing really nasty anymore, just sitting around with a head full of phlegm that keeps leaking out our noses. Me poor babies nose is red & chapped from too much kleenex and I fear so is me own, so I figure it's a good time to sit down and figure out how to help me buddy out.

But since I can't seem to get it started, I thought I'd turn to me friends to help me. About the only thing he has that I think is "salvageable" is his monitor, which he should get a new one of anyways but I'll let him figure that out later. I do have an SB-live 5.1 sitting on a shelf & a NIC, but that's about it.

So; case, PS, mobo, CPU, RAM, HD, viddy card, DVD.....how cheap for half-decent?

Case.....cheap medicore one like mine for like 30$(shipped)......... Cheap 350W PSU 30-40$.........athlond xp 1700 (palamino) 49$ (pricewatch)........PC2100 ram 90$ pricewatch.........HD.....googlegear or newegg had a nice cheap one for 80$.....Ti4200 online for about 130$ somewhere....... BINGO! 510 minimum or maybe 600 max..... But what is he really looing for? You could be well off buying a cheapo ebay prebuilt and putting a different viddy card in it.

Try a 40GB Seagate HD...mine was about 75 bux i think
The radeon 8500 128 MB(NOT the LE) is badass..and really cheap now(100 or so?)
I have an Ahtlon XP1800+...but even a 1600+ can get OCed easy(if u have a good fan)
As for a mobo...most definately the ECS K7VTA3...its about 60 bux and hasn't given me a problem yet..and I have done stuff that would cook any P4 system any day of the week(i rean it at about 80 degrees for 3 hours ocne on accident... )

anyways...try newegg.com(free shipping is good shipping)

and good luck

rolleyes If I could only stop coughing...

...I swear I'd be able to find something! Me fingers just get all muddled when the coughing/sneezers hit me.

I found this place thru pricewatch looking for barebones, and found a decentish looking deal on a ASUS A7S333 Barebone Kit. With an XP 2100@1.73Ghz, 512MB DDR333, a midtower with two front USBs and a 400w PS for $317....or $173 if I knock the memory off and pick up an XP 1700@1.43Ghz instead. If I did THAT, then picked up some memory over here for $30 per 256MB stick that'd still leave me with about $60us to find a HD & viddy card....

...it's ALMOST seeming do-able. I'm more enthused.

Sell what he has for $100, scrape together another $100 (on top of the $300 & the $100 sale) & get this: http://discuss.futuremark.com/forum/...=5&o=0&fpart=1 or sell him Bubbles for $350 & his old comp & you sell the old comp, add $50 & get it.

If you search the classifieds there, you'll find some good deals & if ya need references on the ppl: I've dealt w/some & there is a sticky thread of references there too.

New for $300 complete? Newegg: ECS K7S5A $55, AXP1700+ $47, Glacial Tech 2210Pro HSF $15, Case Maxtop w/350w PSU $45, 8500LE 64MB $72. That leaves $66 for a HDD, floppy, modem, sound & RAM. He can use SDRAM w/the K7S5A, but the rest will really push his budget.

That $500 rig is killer & I can vouch for the guy as honest.

SPEC'S:

XP2200+
1 x 256mb PC2100 Generic DDR
KX7-333R motherboard with all orignal parts and disc's
SK-6 CPU solid copper kooler and 1 case fan installed
generic mid tower case with 400watt PSU with 2 front USB ports
48x12x48 lite-on burner
16x Sony DVD drive
GF4ti4200 64mb DDR 3.5ns Leadtek all cables and stuff
80gig maxtor ata133 7200 RPM drive 2mb cache
10/100 nic card
sound blaster live 5.1 sound card
new keyboard and mouse

HTH,

Damn, I'd REALLY rather not even if it was to get a better PC! (Me PCs become part of me family, I can't just "sell" family!) I said I would if it were the only option...but thankfully you've given me a muchly better one.

I ran the idea past me friend and he agreed that $500 was in range and worth it if I thought so, which I emphatically do! Do you know the guy selling the system or do you just know the site? (Just wondering 'cause I'm getting ready to finalize the payment arrangements and if you're willing to give him a nod I'll be willing to take a bit of a chance with him.)

Lemme know please

EDITED BITS: Just for those too lazy to follow the link...

He probably wouldn't notice... Plus he'd probably welcome you to it in exchange for finding the deal and providing his lifetime limited tech support.

I actually work with quite a few friends on a similar basis. I sell them my 2nd best goodies at cut-throat costs, and in exchange when I need something, things always come together.

Yeah, I do that too a lot and everyone is a lot better off in the end...but this guy is really special to me and I just plan to give him the bestest system he can possibly get for his money which means "no cheating!" for me like that.

My time will come, this is HIS time. I want it to be a good time for him.

EDITED BITS: Looks like it'll cost just a tad more, I'm having him send it out with 512MB instead. (GOTTA have 512MB!) Here's his latest 3dm2k1se score with it, 14,557.

Hi Dig,

Sorry if I'm a lil late here, I had the email thingy on & just got one that you'd replied.

I've never personally dealt w/Tbogstad but I've seen his ads & the ppl that have dealt with him report back he is a good person to deal with. He's been on MO/FM for awhile & his posts are mature. I wouldn't hesitate to deal with him & that's why when I saw the ad & your post here I linked ya.

14K, d@mn that's more than my 9700 rig! http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=5670841

Enjoy & no problem for the info. My pleasure.

fisrt things first... sell what he has for more working capitol!! if your slick enough you'll get a extra $100-$200 .... I would stick to the basics, cheap board, sdram (512),a origional radeon, geforce 3 or something, 1.2 ghz amd, cheap case (watch out for ones with sharp edges), about a 40 gb hdd....

Check out pricewatch!! Hey or just check out ebay!!!!!! it can be done....

good luck....

Nope.

Not one bit. I've spent a lot more time as a geek with an out-of-date system than the time I've spent with what I consider to be a "current" gaming rig....I expect I'll survive somehow.

EDITED BITS: And you're right with the "WE", full credit to ya and me thanks on the find.

JAV - Well, you're using an inferior OS and mobo.

Are you at least using DDR on that sucker?

Oh, and bring on the 03 nuttiness. I'm ready and waiting.

Yeah, I had to run to PriceWatch to throw some numbers around. Considering how much you are spending you coulda actually built something similar to what I suggested.

Nah, why waste DDR on a K7S5A? It's only worth ~500pts on this mobo. When it gets cheaper & I can afford a 8RDA ... The 1900+ Palomino doesn't help in the OC dept either.

I got no complaints tho': I've only got ~$450 total in the whole system. Kinda hard to spend $80-$100 on DDR when the 9700 Pro only cost $100.

Inferior OS? I don't have IRQ, APIC, APCI, etc. issues & spend my time looking for XP 'fixes' > I play & play & play the games & run the proggies I bought the comp for. BSOD ??? What is that anyway & why, oh why, would I want an OS with spyware in it? You're kidding yourself if you don't think XP is keeping track of you & M$ is compiling the info.

98SE 'til the hubcaps fall off & then I'll drive it on the rims.

Who in the Hell brought up that bloated POS XP?

I run Win2k, so I can game just as fast or faster than you can.... and I can do it for longer. No nightly shutdowns/reboots for me.
