Great news - glad its all working.

Watch those temps on the cards if your going to o/c them, mine go through the roof, when i set them to ultra speeds they topped out at 90c and i chickened out then, but they run most games really well at stock speeds.

so whats a "Safe" temp then? they used to go from 500/1000 to 560/1110 fine, but i didnt have the guts to push it much further, plus if i did i would need to oc the cpu to get much more out, which sounds quite complicated for me!

Oh and sorry for all the posts above, if you want ill edit them down into one

EDIT - well heres another quesion, should i overclock the ram?

EDIT - Mk 2 - yet more questions!

Looking at the specs in my sig, which is the bit that most need upgrading, RAM, GFX card or CPU?

7900GT or

355 $$ x1900XT Might as well get something like that.. 355 isn't much more than 340.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102025

Be careful with Nvidia 7900 GT "OC" too, unless they are EVGA's new batch.. the "Reloaded" RoHS ones. Same with 7900GTX's and GTX OC versions.. (about 500 bucks though).. I just RMA's my old one and got a new version (in sig) and the new ones are solid.. but do not clock as high on the ram, but they don't flake out either.

That X1900XT looks like good deal..

Thats cool... Make sure you get a reloaded 7900GT then.

http://www.evga.com/articles/317.asp

EVGA is announcing the following NEW SKUs to its 7900 Series of products.

7900 GTX Series

"New" Part Number -------- Existing Part Number
512-P2-N571-AR ------------512-P2-N570-AX
512-P2-N572-AR------------ 512-P2-N570-AX

7900 GT Series

"New" Part Number ------------ Existing Part Number
256-P2-N580-AR/BR---------- 256-P2-N560-AX/BX/DX
256-P2-N582-AR/BR---------- 256-P2-N562-AX/BX/DX
256-P2-N583-AR/BR---------- 256-P2-N563-AX/BX/DX
256-P2-N584-AR/BR---------- 256-P2-N564-AX/BX/DX/FX

EVGA has been working out the new SKUs to resolve the issues that some users are experiencing with artifacting during 3DMark06 and random games; we have been manufacturing new cards based on a new AVL list.

Here are the details on the new 7900 cards:

"New" AVL Memory (Approved Vendor List)
RoHS compliant
Test results are extremely positive

Keep in mine EVGA wasn't the only Nvidia card manufacturer having these problems. But they are doing the most (by far) to fix it.. If you can find a New SKU EVGA 7900GT get that.

EDIT- not sure if they even sell them over there though... you might have to research that.. or just get another brand that you can find over there- but make sure the company has a very good RMA service, as well as the retailer.

i know they sell 7900GT's. but not sure of eVGA, ill check in a min, but i do know my dad has a 7800GTX, i would ask him to upgrade (ie pay part of the upgrade, then i might get it), but its a heatsink only model.

I just re-benchamarked my pc using 3D Mark 03, 05 & 06 and its 1.73x faster with the second card! and compared to my old pc (a radeon 9600 XT) its 6.05x faster!

Scores in sig

woo! now im back where i was with my ATi card (ie getting the right software, how i loved ATi Tray Tools!) i think ill try some 3rd party drivers like Z-Tweaked, but can anyone tell me about nTweaker? ut says it applies all the things the driver does, but without you having to install a new driver, it sounds good, but i thought id get some more opinions first

BTW - are you the same BWX as on LFSForum.net?

EDIT - GAH! same problems have returned , very pissed, looking at a 7600 or a 7800, so i think i either need a new cpu (which leaves me going X2 or looking at old FX's) or oc'ing the hell outta my 4000, what do you think i shoudl do?

EDIT - just spoke to my dad, hes fine with me selling it on eBay so im on the hunt for a new gfx card!

Sorry to see you are still having problems with the sli setup.
If your on the hunt for a 7900gt, i've just seen some on overclockers.co.uk for £180-200. I think they have the evga cards that BWX mentioned in his post.

just when you thought this n00b had left you, oh no, my CPU is getting really hot (read, 45 degrees @ 5% overclock, 2520 Mhz), i do have another OEM AMD fan with heatpipes on it, but should i just go looking for another fan? i would like to get a Hyper 48, but its too expensive, and was looking for something around the £20 range, what do you recomend?

if you mean 45° under load then that sounds alright to me tbh

Idle temp, I might be with you on the new cooler front.

hmmm, put the oem fan from my dads X2 4400+ on (he has a Zalman Reserator, and i want one!), and it is running a bit cooler (but still hits 50 under full load with 10% overclock), as it looks to be a better bit of kit, but that just doesnt seem enough for me, and ive been looking at more fans, and wonder if any of you have any experience with the following:
Any of the Zalman Flower series (they look good, but the heat sink makes me think there geared towards noise as a pose to cooling)
Cooler Master Hyper 48
Cooler Master Aquagate Mini R 120 and 80
and also, could i trust a second hand reserator of eBay? if so, would it be worth buying a fan from Zalman to fit over the top of the resivour to cool it?

I was thinking about one of those. Of course my CPU runs so cool I think I could run it with no heatsink at all sometimes. Stock cooling for me is adequate.

It looks like a nice cooler to me.. I haven;t seen a LOT of benchmarks or reviews though.. maybe you want to look some up before buying it, but I bet it is a good cooler.

hmmmmm, looks like at stock fequencies the cpu can cope, but i am still on the prowl, a pc magazine just reviewed the "Zalman Ultra Quiet CPU Cooler AM2" and said that it kept a 4600 X2 at 41 degrees c under full load, now i know that as that is AM2 it probably wouldn't fit, but i was thinking that perhaps there was a "normal" 939 version, and if so if anyone had any experience with it
