SATA or IDE harddrive?

Hi,

I'm thinking of replacing the maxtor harddrive in my computer because it seems to be giving me problems. I'm going to get a seagate model but i'm wondering wheather to get an IDE or SATA harddrive. Any advice would strongly appreciated.

What motherboard do you have? Does it support SATA? Does your PSU have a SATA power plug? Will you be installing Windows on this SATA hard drive?

I have an Asus Sli-SE which is socket 939 I'm unsure wheather the PSU supports it though i'll have to check

I recently purchased the Seagate 7200.10 SATA II 320 Gig with PRT and its fantastic!

Edit: i should add that my current harddrive is a maxtor 6V300F0

Edit2: My current harddrive is a SATA so is SATA generally more desirable than IDE?

Edit3: i'm liking the look of your harddrive Instg8r

Yeah SATA is preferable even if the practical performance may still not differ much in between similar SATA/IDE(or ParallellATA) models. The only downside is that the cable connectors need to be handled more carefully than the old clunky flat IDE/PATA cables.

One last question: on the overclockers website they reccomend these [color=#0000ff]Akasa Serial ATA Cables.[/color] Are they worth it?

Most of the psu's today either come with sata psu cable extentions OR the motherboard.. i think that motherboard you mentioned has SATA PSU (standard 4 pin to SATA power connector adapter)

Im very happy with it. its quick relatively quiet(I just purchased an aluminum case so it resonates a little more in it when its searching) but I highly reccomend it great technology for the price

That has power and data on same cable!? Or is there a connecter in the back for the power? On the western digital one.

No, it's not the same, it's just the data cable and then you use a 4pin molex.

That WD SATA Cable came with my WD HD. It's no different really, I'm using the generic cable that came with my motherboard.

And yes, SATA is more new and overall better versus IDE.

The only reason you'd want a PATA drive these days is for an external enclosure... even still I just farm out my remaining PATA drives out to those and buy SATA drives

The difference between 133mbs and 150mbs is trivial. Real gain to SATA is if you utilize the extra speed and bandwidth for raid applications or just want to get rid of the clumsy eide cables for the smaller, slimmer serial cables.

However, the newer SATAII drives with NCQ and a proper SATAII controller is a better reason to upgrade to serial ata drives. These are capable of 3gbs--more than we'll ever use for at least the next half-decade.

P.S. Maxtor was bought out by Seagate earlier this year.

ya and the old Diamond Max 11's still have slightly faster specs than Seagate's similar offerings.

They were the last drives Maxtor put out before the takeover and they still are no slouches.
