AM2 is the new socket, and it has been out for a wile. No one is sure if it will be used for their K8L, however. They said they wanted to make the AM2 the new socket A, meaning they want to stick with it for a wile... but there are rumors...

They really don't have an answer to Conroe yet, K8L will be, but it likely won't be out till December at the earliest.

am3 cpus will run on am2 boards cause the memory controller will work with ddr2 and ddr3.
So those who have AM2 mobos now can just slot in an Am3 cpu once it comes out(i.e K8L)
Or atleast thats what i heard.
Right now the only thing AMD can do to fight against core 2 duo,is cut their prices like there's no tomorrow.Which they'll be doing sooner or later.

AM2 is just a socket, AMD sadly still only has the FX60 or somthing as their flagship chip, which has been benched as being 20-40% slower then the high end Conroe.

K8L will hopefully be the answer to Conroe.

EDIT: ya, it prob guna reliese early 2007 (same time as conroe AND windows vista AND the "next gen" GPU's from ATI and nVidia...) but i dont wana hear the prices. ppl say for some odd reason that conroe will be quite affordable. id love to see some proof in that but iff its true, K8L will probably price to compete. (i WAS about to build a new computer, but after all this new info... i think ill wait till january, when my budgets bigger and theres better stuff to spend it on
