Help, computer not turning on!
My new motherboard just came in, as an RMA return from Newegg. Before I returned it, when you would flip the switch on the power supply, the computer would immediately turn on, and display absolutely nothing on the monitor. To make sure it was the motherboard, I put my friends motherboard into my computer, and plugged all my components into it. It worked fine, BIOS and Windows booted.
Now that my new motheboard is here, I'm still having problems. I hooked everything up, and flipped the switch on the power supply. All the fans briefly jittered like they usually do when you turn the PSU on, except now the computer won't turn on. The power button does nothing. I've double checked everything I could think of, I took the motherboard out, remounted it, took all the components and hardware out and put then back in. I'm stuck, frustrated, and out of ideas. Help anybody? |

Check you motherboard manual on how to reset the bios, and which jumper you need to change in order to do so. The normal procedure would be to unplug the power, remove the motherboard battery, change the jumpers to reset the bios, then reverse the order. If it boots up after that then go into the bios, and reload "Setup Defaults" first, then making your changes to the rest as needed.
It could be that the system mistakenly detecting a piece of hardware, probably the CPUs speed, or the memory timings on the ram. |

if cmos reset doesnt work then make sure the mobo not shorting & touching some metal piece on the case
& on a related story, my friend once dropped a screw.. & it fell on the mobo... & he tried to turn on the comp, but it would only turn on the fans & that was it... turns out, the pcb got scratched... i forgot what happened after hehe, i told him to use a lead pencil & redraw the missing lines |

Try booting with just one stick of RAM, then the other. This just happened on my wife's PC. Turned out it was a faulty stick of RAM.

All my components work, since they were tested in another motherboard before I sent in the RMA.
I'm still getting nothing... |

How do you know if Resetting CMOS works?
I did what the manual told me, short two pins with a jumper for five seconds, by moving the jumper from the "default" position to the "Clear" position. When attempting to then boot, should I keep it on Clear for the first time, or put it back to Default. And some of you said that clearing CMOS takes 15 minutes, or even overnight. The manual says only 5 seconds, just seems a bit odd. I tried both, and still nothing... |

15 minutes isn't necessary. That's more to do with making sure the capactiors are discharged.
Steps: Unplug the power. Remove battery. Short jumpers for 5 seconds. Replace the jumpers back into the original position. Now, you can either replace the battery, then hookup the system power, or try the system out first to make sure it works, then place then battery back. If it doesn't work you can try resetting the bios again. This way you won't have to remove the battery again, and as along as you keep the power cord plugged in, and the power supply in the "on" position your bios settings will remain active. You will pretty much know if your bios is reset when you bootup. BTW, even though your parts worked in your friends machine I would try using his ram and CPU on your board. At least try the ram. It could be that your board is being picky on the ram timings, or is misreading or doesn't recognize your CPU. If it does work I would take the opportunity while it's working to see if there is a bios update for your board. Update it using his parts, then replace them with yours to see if the problem continues. |
