well the first thing you need to work out is the money you have to budget for this ... how much are you thinking of spending ... around $2000? more? less? if you get that, then you can work the components out to get a well balanced system.
post more details. |

Definately. The first thing to do when planning a new system is to know what your budget is and what you want the box for, you can pretty much work everything backwards from there.

are you in the UK? or the US?
if you are in the UK, then I suggest a quick look around http://www.overclockers.co.uk to get pricing for a good AMD based system (for price)... they do alot of nice heatsinks, cases and they frequently have some good offers .....would you prefer a P4 based system? the reason I ask is that you will have to budget more. I would recommend a 2100+ for price, and if you use this in conjunction with a delta you will get it to 1.85-1.9ghz from 1.73 (getting more performance than a 2.4 generally for alot less cost). the costly thing is the graphics card .. if you budget for a 4200 and overclock the hell out of it .. you can save money.... take a look around that site for ideas and post what you think you would like according to your budget... then we can give our opinions. |

I agree with Zardon on the graphics card...
The 4600 is just too expensive. Look at the 4200, or the Radeon 8500LE (THE 128MB CARD, not the 64MB!) You should be able to save yourself quite a lot of money that way ...The 2000+ processor will overclock to 2200+ speeds with its stock cooler. That would be my suggestion for a cpu. As far as the motherboard the FIC AN-11 motherboard will give you plent of performance, and nice bang for the buck! Overall, I would suggest (concidering your budget) that you stay closer to mid range products that have a high potential. See if you can find a company over in the UK that has SkyHawk brand aluminum cases. They are very high quality, and they don't cost too much. I can get them here in the US for around $60. Good Luck! |

My opinion --- and a pretty radical one at that....
Get yourself a Thoroughbred core... they should be coming out soon... right? As for the Mobo.... I would definitely recomend Abit... With the Raid.. I've found it best to lean away from large drives... and instead go with several smaller drives which can be raided (for the same price nonetheless) ... you will get better performance this way. As for the sound card... i find that Hercules makes very good quality sound cards... Video card...(and i'm sure you all will kill me for this)... I'd go with anything above a R85k with 64MB ram... Its' way more than enough... and i really don't see the need for more ram. If you've got 1800$ I'm sure you would probably wanna shell out for the GF4 4400 ... and that is a beautiful card. ![]() One last thing i've found (after two burnt power supplies): get an Enermax... or something better than the oem trash... just my humble opinion. So AXP 2200 w/ Abit KX7333 Raid. oh, and whatever you choose... good luck!

The new Athlon processor is going to be on a .13 micron process... Vs. the .18 micron process that the current XP is on. This should bring a major improvement to the table in both power consumption, and in clock speed... Because it will have a lower power consumption... it will probably have a lower temperature, and will require less voltage... Both are very good for overclocking.
I would definetly wait until the Thoroughbred processor hits...Good luck! |

Does anyone have any Thoroughbred PR reports or anything about when exactly it will be out? I want like a 2500+, but I need to know when I can get it!

...while I really like my Hercules Fortissimo II soundcard, I wish I would have gotten the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. I've heard nothing but raving about it from all my friends who got one.
Also, do some net bargain hunting for a cheap set of Altec-Lansing speakers! I got a AL IBM345 2.1 system that beats the hell out of my 4.1 cyber-accoustic systems (Yeah, I know already! You don't have to rub it in...) and it only cost me $33us. The bass kickers on Altec-lansings has to be heard to be believed! Oh, and I'm gonna be silly and agree with one of the above posters hard: Ennermax Ennermax Ennermax Ennermax Ennermax Ennermax Not only are they reliable as hell and delivery the most steady power I've ever seen, but the power cords are long enough that you can pull the power-supply and set it on the floor without disconnecting a thing. (Or mount it at a weird angle on the outside back of your case to cut down on the internal heat....I've GOT to take some pictures of my rigs after my latest mod! )My last bit of advice is simple: tin-snips and LOTS of fans!
