Quad core (kentsfield) worth wait?
Atm. I'm hating my current system, got an abit an8 which really doens't wanna do anything beside running standard speed and it's nforce sata controller is way to buggy for my taste
![]() So I'm getting a new "pc", new motherboard, cpu and ram and like everybody else i want a conroe, BUT. I was thinking if it's worth waiting for the quad core version of Conroe (Kentsfield), will it really kick that much ass or is quad cores overkill an no programs/games cant benefit from the four cores? Tests like http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/....php?p=1527913 , http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=108698 , http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=107092 and http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=108649 really makes you go hmmm ![]() Quad core overkill and only usefull in pi or kickass, what's your view? |

my view is that quad core(atleast kentsfield)won't be required.Sure it helps in multitasking.
But games are still gpu limited so even with 4 cores, performance won't increase. And kentsfield will be like presler all over again.2 dice on the same package and each core only has access to 4mb shared cache.I'd wait till intel's native quad-core is out.I think it was called clovertown. And the other thing would be the price. The x6800 currently retails for $1000 and its dual core.So i can only imagine how much the kentsfield models would cost.It sure won't be cheap. As for me quad core might come in approx 1-2yrs after i get a cheap allendale. |

unreal tournament 2007 will take full advantage of multiple cores, the physics engine presented in that game is unreal.

If you need a new PC buy a nice conroe now and enjoy it. Quad is definitely nice but but like mentioned I'm sure it will cost a nice chunk. An OCed E6600 is all one would need for a very long time regardless of what you use your PC for. As for UT2007, no cpu will be able to do the physics that the Ageia PhysX will be capable of in that game; I can't wait
