16:9 vs 4:3 quick question
Two 19" TFT monitors, one is widescreen the other is not. Am I right to think that the widescreen monitor will have much smaller screen size? If the 19" is the distance between two opposite corners of the screen (ie top left to bottom right), then to have a widescreen monitor of 19", wouldn't that make it smaller, especialy shorter?

shorter yes...
but actually desktop display area, well depends. OK lets just take some examples that i found quick and easy to find. Since i can't really find 2 identical monitors that are both 19inc in a widescreen and normal format with all the specs easy to come by (and to do it quick) We've got a Acer 20" Widescreen LCD and a 19" Acer LCD (normal screen ratio) the fairly excellent quality 19" normal screen has a resolution of 1280x1024 native. That is 1,310,720 pixels of complete area/space taken. As for physical space on the screen itself, well if my current 19" standard ratio AL1951 is to be used. it's 12"x15" so 180^2" of viewable physical space. Now the similare model widescreen, although a 20" (not THAT big of a difference in comparison to a 19") has usually a resolution of 1680 x 1050 which = 1,764,000 pixels (obviously MORE desktop space and higher resolution/detail) The physical view however is most likely a little larger yet to...
