Quick Question about SATA
Are 3 GB/s SATA drives backwards compatible with 1.5 GB/s Motherboards?
Common sense says they should be, but better safe than sorry. Thanks. |

i suggest you list the hardwares that your're having now and also the new hardware that you want to add to it, so that people can help you better.
another way is: to check with the hardwares vendors and manufacturers for a confirmation... |

from my understanding, sata 2 is fully backward compatable. just depends on the jumper placement.

yep that's true, but it's just not always.
sometimes only people who have used the exact same hardwares/models (and sometimes same configurations, same board revision, same system BIOS and hard drive firmware) knows for certain. Quote:

A friend of mine is looking at that board to build a cheap machine with modest gaming capabilities. I'm not sure which drive we were looking at because I was 30 miles away at the time. But it seems I got the answer from mike2h, thanks by the way. |

i don't know about that board nor haven't look at it, but if i remember correctly, it's in this our forums there was a post question that needs help and i was trying to help the user on trying to use a SATA 3.0Gb/s drive that he just bought on a SATA 1.5Gb/s only motherboard, the user insisted that it wouldn't work on his via based chipset for Intel processors.

then that was a hardware problem with the mb or drive as sata & sata2 are interchangeable.

They are compatible just sometimes some older SATA1 mobo's want the SATA1 jumper put on for compatibility. No reason not to get a SATA2 drive
