??? Formatting CD-R'S

Here's a good place to show some ignorence.

Is it possible to format CD-R'S so that you can constantly burn things to them, until they are completely full???

I have always been under the understanding that you could write to a CD-R only once, and that was it.

Yes, you make a multisession CD What software are you using? I'll try and walk you through making one

EDIT: No, you can't write to a CD more than once in terms of deleting and then reusing space on there, but you can write once to the portions that you didn't get in a previous session...

Roxio licks big fat donkey balls when it comes to doing anything serious... as does damn near everything else out there. Now, with that out of my system, here is how you can do multi-session in nero, assuming that the wizard or anything isn't bothering you at the beginning of Nero:

File->New
Click "Start Multisession Disc", then "New"

That's it. Pretty simple, aint it? When you put the disc in again, though, its a mite more complex, you do this:

File->New
Click on "Continue Multisession Disc", then click Start
Use normally.

Easy enough, isn't it?

I thiiiink you can format CD-R's in a DirectCD/InCD (packet-writing) format. Meaning, you can use it like a floppy, but only adds things to the CD.
Can't you? Maybe WinXP will even format it for you . . . .

Of course, if you can, you'll lose 100-150 MB for the formatting.

InCD (with Nero) does NOT support formatting CD-R - so your only choice with Nero is multisession recording - and for best compatibility, remember to CLOSE after the last session you expect to fit.

DirectCD (with Roxio products) - CAN format CD-R

The format is called variable packet, and does NOT have the same overhead as fixed packet (CD-RW).

The drawback, is that an open variable packet session can ONLY be reda by DirectCD in the WRITER - to read in other drives, you must close the session, then it can be read without any additional UDF reader software.

Most other packet utilities are CD-RW only, but a couple of others do support CD-R

Actually If you use the Roxio written utilities under XP.
You avoid the limitations of that Roxio Direct CD CRAP

Strange it was authored by the same company

You can leave a session open, readable by any CDR and add to it at any time.
My Drivers CD is 3 months running and still opens even on older CDR's.

To be honest thats all I use it for.
For Bins or ISO's or more serious stuff.
Alcohol 120% and Clone CD are the most reliable, in my HUMBLE opinion

+ IBM DLA

It's the fastest... drag and drop from anywhere, delete and edit on the fly, quick format (erase completely the disk in less than a minute). Of course, you have to full format the medium with DLA at least once (first time). Beware of compatibility issues with systems which don't have DLA installed.
