Trusting RAM is a risky proposition

Intel seems to have relaxed their socket 775 updating cycle... it is said that Quad core will work with 775 just fine with a BIOS update.

It seems that Intel took a hint from AMD and stopped the uber cycle of socket refreshes and now AMD is doing the opposite.

Note: AM3 is supposed to be compatible with AM2 and vice versa

man just think about it.

you can get a cheap mobo, cpu and ram if you go the 939 path and all of it will be TOP quality and highest speed. and for gaming an x2 4800+ is extremly fast.

enjoy

The Dual-core opteron's are faster than X2's...My friend had one for about 3 months, and he got a lot of fps in games, and without ever slowing down the performance of desktop computing..as in decoding a video, listening to music, IM'ng and playing at the same time, and no loss of performance. Trust me, this will be a good buy...but now he switched to a C2D, and he loves it. He says the performance went down a bit, but its still an excellent choice. Hopefully that helped.

if u are upgrading now AM2 or C2D is the way to go.DDR2 memory is needed in either case. And that will last u a long while until DDR3 is available to the masses. That will mostly come after Q3 2007.
Next up mainboard. If u buy an AM2 board right now,u can still put in AM3 based cpu's in it.
As for intel u'll be fine till intel releases Nehalem which is a long while away.
AM2 builds are generally cheaper now relative to C2D builds.
Which ever u choose, make sure u get atleast a gig of RAM and a dual core proc.
For AM2-An x2 4200+ is good and for C2D-E6400.
AM2 Maiboard-Nforce 590 or 570 based motherboard.
C2D-P965 based motherboard-Like ASUS P5B,Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 etc...

On Newegg there's also a nice 4200+ dual core for about $185

Just my $.02 *shrug*
I would like to see 2gb for 140$, BS its 100$ for 1gb.

More of an exaderation. Prices on Newegg, after rebates, is more like $180-$200. Problem is it's not on the good quality ram (most are low end, no name modules).

They do have one odd set from Mushkin for $180, which is a 2Gb set, and there is no rebate on it. Thing is it's DDR2 667 ram too. Good or not, who knows, but it might be worth the risk.

AM3 (ak K8L) will be coming out soon, prolly in 2007. Save your money and get 939 or get Core 2, on my friend machine the Core2 E6600 owns.

I'm happy with my X2 4600+ 949 system on many game right now.

Umm.. I think I'd know if I bought them

I built a computer for a friend using them and they worked great. It was like $145 after rebates. Just because they aren't there now doesn't mean they weren't/won't be there again.

At the same clockspeed the Opteron and the X2 should perform identically.

And switching to a C2D, even going from the fastest AMD chip to the lowest C2D he shouldn't have seen much of a drop (only if benching IMO)... the E6300 is still one fast mother.
