PSU Going Bad...No Doubt About It!

Well, I've had it for about a year now and I'm positive that it's on its last legs now.

I started noticing a couple weeks ago that the system would shutdown after some heavy gaming on OBLIVION. I could smell something getting hot, too.

So, I removed the side case and the problem stopped. Tonight, I decided to put the side case back on to see if I could definitely pinpoint the source of the problem. Within 30 minutes, I had complete system shutdown and it attempted to restart...but failed.

So, I quickly removed the side case the the PSU was so hot it nearly burned my hand to touch it.

I won't be risking its use and will replace it today.

What brand/model was/is the PSU? One year life-time isn't much...

Was the fan working? - I've swapped the fan in a PSU - it's a soldering (or cut/twist & tape) job, but can give a new lease of life to a PSU with a failing fan.

This is an Ultra V Series 500W ATX PSU.

I still have the original box and will be taking it back to the store where I bought it. I've been a longtime customer there and they do have a record of my purchases. Maybe will get a new and better one in exchange.

Wise to get it out of your rig, mine fried the mobo when it went. That is unless you want an upgrade.

my brother had the same one and it crapped out after about a year aswell, *knocks on wood*, id recomend a nice OCZ one, as mine has served me well.

Ultra PSU's are known to do stuff like that
