That type of work is right down Intel's alley.

In my area, both Fry's and MicroCenter have had some good mobo/CPU combos lately. Might check those out if you're near one.

You may want to consider an Intel mainboard if your brother isn't interested in overclocking - the board below has the goods except external SATA - and should be solid. The price will help to keep your system cost with 2G of ram under 800.00 with the rest... Are you buying a monitor or is your budget just for the box (...keyboard, and mouse etc too?)?

I got my XION II case at M/C for $60. It's some of the best money I've ever spent. Very nice, very roomy, and lots of cooling fans. It will handle any mobo selected, too. If it were my choice, though, I wouldn't opt for the X1600. I'd go for at least an X1800 series. (Just in case he decides he'd like to do some gaming. )

For CAD I would say Xeon workstation but if you're on a budget a dual core is absolute minimum

A consideration for the very near future (within the next year or so...) will be HDCP compliance for the video card and monitor you purchase. Gateway sells some nice LCDs that are HDCP compliant that are good performers for your brother's intended use (video and CAD). Check the latest video cards carefully though - there are not many that have HDCP compliance yet...
I tried putting together a nice system with the Intel board above, case, power supply, memory, and so forth - and had a bit of a rough time coming in under budget - maybe you could use this as a guide (no monitor here - go to Gateway...) and tweak it down... ![]() ATX Computer Cases CHENMING CMU-S-602-BK Black/Gray 1.0mm SECC Server Computer Case - Retail Model #: CMU-S-602-BK Item #: N82E16811125446 $56.99 $56.99 Internal Hard Drives Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3500630A 500GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM Model #: ST3500630A Item #: N82E16822148135 $229.99-$80.00 Instant $149.99 Video Cards HIS Hightech H165XTQT256GDDN-R Radeon X1650XT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 IceQ Turbo HDCP Video Card - Retail Model #: H165XTQT256GDDN-R Item #: N82E16814161049 $167.99 $167.99 Power Supplies Antec EA380 ATX12V v2.0 380W Power Supply - Retail Model #: EA380 Item #: N82E16817371005 $64.99 $64.99 Keyboards Microsoft Wired ZG6-00006 Black PS/2 Standard Keyboard - Retail Model #: ZG6-00006 Item #: N82E16823109164 $14.99-$5.00 Instant $9.99 Mouse Microsoft D66-00066 Black 3 Buttons 1x Wheel USB + PS/2 Optical Mouse - OEM Model #: D66-00066S Item #: N82E16826105185 $10.99 $10.99 Desktop Memory G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - Retail Model #: F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ Item #: N82E16820231098 $214.99 $214.99 Intel-compatible Motherboards Intel BOXDP965LTCK Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail Model #: BOXDP965LTCK Item #: N82E16813121035 $106.99 $106.99 Processors Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6400 - Retail Model #: BX80557E6400 Item #: N82E16819115004 $218.50 $218.50 Operating Systems Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 SP2b w/Upgrade Coupon for Vista - OEM Model #: M93-00439 Item #: N82E16832116171 $109.99 $109.99 Total(before tax): $1,111.41 As a guide...

Why skimp out on the powersupply so much?Isn't 380W a bit too little.I'd suggest a good 500W from OCZ or Enermax.

and for the gfx card i suggest u spend $30 more and get urself a radeon x1950 pro. That is much better than the x1650 xt.Even for the occasional gaming u'll be able to play with much better IQ.
As for the power supply, get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817711001 or this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817163112 And for the card try this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161043 |

He's not a heavy gamer, but the X1950 pro would be my personal choice today for a system for me - he does video and CAD - the X1650 is good for that...
And the PSU, had to rob Peter to pay Paul somehow and try and hit his budget - one hard drive, one optical drive, X1650, Core2 (not overclocking...) - should be enough. If I were buying a PSU, would like to get a stronger Enermax, but the budget issue again...
