System Specs

Philco PVD1000 standalone DVD/CD player...

Got the above player dirt cheap (20.00 after rebate) on Black Friday and wanted to note a feature for the record here, as well as ask a question.

When installing the unit into my A/V system (no, I didn't read the installation manual - are you kidding? ) I wondered if the unit would output the digital audio data stream during CD playback to my receiver. Well, it does (the analog audio outputs are disconnected) and I'm quite happy about that, as the D/A converters in those el-cheapos are not high quality at all. The D/A converters in my Yamaha receiver, however, are - so the cheap player allows me better quality CD playback than my previous DVD/CD player as it fed the digital audio data stream only during DVD playback. No mention of this 'feature (!)' is made in the owner's manual (I looked after everything was set up)

Is this typical of late model standalone players?

This undocumented feature is a very satisfying surprise to me...
