USB Flash Drives questions

Are they all more or less the same quality? I can find 256MB and 512MB drives for less than 20 euros though not any brand I know of. Are they any good, meaning, can one be trusted to safely copy and keep data?
Are any precautions that one should take to have one serve him for a long time without losing the data in it?

Best way to make sure is to take as good care of it as possible.

So far every flash USB drive i've handled has worked for ages without any issues. Usually if anything is going to go wrong, it'll show emediate issues.

I would suspect the only difference between the various types of flash drives in price is probably there flash memory type and speeds. I've seen some damn slow Flash Drives.

I'm quite impressed with the OCZ USB 2.0 2GB Flash drive i've got here.... cheap and pretty quick.

Concerning flash disks, quality is usually nearly the same when it comes to the electronic parts. This is because most of the companies who build flash disks do not actually build them but buy them from well known manufacturers. However, the overall quality will vary, especially when it comes to the chassis. The chassis of cheap drives is usually nothing more than cheap plastic which will easily break and is nothing nearly shockproof/waterproof.

Other than that, flash drives are usually very dependable and will last years. Simple precautions would be to keep them clean, remove them from the USB port while not using them and away from strong electromagnetic fields (eg speakers, power amplifiers, cellular phones).

Finally, because you haven't ever heard of a brand, it does not necessarily mean that it is a bad manufacturer.

Thank you for your posts. I told her (my mother) to get a Kingston 1GB drive. It is white and silver/grey colour. It works great.

You did well with the Kingston.
Any of the top RAM mfg's, Kingston, OCZ, Corsair, Crucial, etc., will do you well.

BlueMak, you may want to rethink your choice after reading a review I noticed reading a while ago at Anandtech 1Gig Flash Drive Roundup. The Kingston (a good brand though...) came in last in that particular review. Hopefully they have improved since then...

I agree with Grace. Though I'm partial to my Corsair as opposed to my generic drive.

Whoops! Sorry about that - I referenced the wrong article there by mistake Here at Anandtech is the review I meant to reference.

Again, sorry, I must have just blown through the title last evening...

The Kingston's look much better in that review...

I've carried a Lexar Jumpdrive (1G) drive in my pocket every (!) day for a year and a half now - not a single problem ever...

Well, so far it is a good drive, not going to be used very often so I am happy and she is happy with it.

3 years running on my Lexar 256MB drive... solid solid drives these things.

My dad's Verbatim Store n Go Pro 1GB is much the same except WAY faster... that thing is a demon. Feels faster than an OCZ dual channel drive (haven't been able to bench 2 of them)
