New processor, new memory?

I've been thinking lately of getting an AMD Opteron 2.2ghz dual-core processor. I currently have an AMD 64 3200+, both are socket 939 and my current RAM is kingston DDR3200, 4 stix of 512MB. If I put in the Opteron will I need to change my RAM type or is the ram type based on my mobo(which happens to be a piece of $#!@)?

I don't think that you must change your ram.

If you stick with the same socket, the ram can stay....

Yes, ram can stay as long as the Opteron is S939 as well. The memory controller is build onto the cpu though, so if you're overclocking or optimizing timings it's possible that you'll have different results with the Opteron as compared to your current processor.

just check at your motherboard manufacturer's web site to make sure the motherboard supports the exact processor you plan to use.
and if nothing's wrong with the memory modules, then you should still be able to use them,
but since you mention they "happens to be a piece of $#!@", is that means... something's wrong with them, you didn't mention what's wrong with them?

i think so once reread his messages, but is that means the motherboard is already no good, too many problems or something? hmm, why he wants to change the processor, but not the motherboard?

The mobo is good enough, it just has very, VERY limited options on the bios. I guess I could get both a new mobo and the opteron, what would be a good mobo that has socket 939 and DDR 3200 for a budget of $300 and the opteron costs $228? The opteron price is off newegg where I'll be getting all my parts from now on, they rock.

this MSI board is a good board for its price . it's what i'm using in my sister's machine. I used to sell this board all the time back when i used to work at the store.

BTW, it comes out to about $75 after taxes and shipping.

Not too bad of a board for that price, thx CDsdontburn. Now I just need a big bundle of cash to magically jump in my x-mas stocking. Thanks for all the help every1.
