looking to upgrade, will this work?

Hi everyone. I'm going to be building a new computer here within the next month or two. The thing is, I havn't built a computer for at least a year and a half (it seemed easier then ). Now I'm seeing RAM at 1066Mhz but motherboards that only support 800Mhz.

Am I not looking hard enough for right motherboard, or am I just completely missing something? (I honestly wouldn't doubt the latter...)

What I'm looking at right now is:
Intel Core2 Extreme QX6700
Intel 975XBX2KR
Corsair DHX XMS2 Dominator Dual Channel 2048mb pc8500 (x2, so 4gigs)
2 HD's, and blah blah, the rest isn't really important.

What I'd like to know, is that ram meant for OC'ing? Will it work? Would I run into problems using it on this MB?

That's one expensive machine there...

PC2-8500 RAM is meant for overclocking mostly, but it will work just fine in your system. Even if you won't overclock, I am almost certain that this motherboard can natively run the RAM at 1066MHz, it ought to have a proper divider.

If your spending this much on a system. Go for the Corsair Dominator 8888C4DF bout 1200 for 4gbs. Quadcore if your not doing like video editing and imaging and stuff isnt worth it a OCd Core 2 duo will perform as good or better and some people have problems OCing their quad and getting it stable.

The NVIDIA 680i chipset is a good board, that is, if you don't have any of the SATA/RAID issues associated with it

DDR2-800 4GB (2 x 2GB) Kit/Twin memory modules may be more available early next year.
as fas as i know, right now G.Skill has already have one, but it's factory tested and set to CL6 1.8V/1.9V.
i haven't looked up for any review articles on them, nor haven't emailed G.Skill to request infomation on this memory modules compatibility testing. but i hope to see thay can be ran at CL5 or CL4 with a bit of RAM voltage increases. however, i think this memory kit has a reasonable price as of now, already. anyway, i hope we should be able to have more choices on DDR2-800 4GB Kits and even better modules in early next year.

U know 4 Dimms will not really help ur overclocking.too much strain on the memory controller in the northrbridge.
Anyway once u overclock the FSB more memory speed options will be available.

So if I don't want to oc, I should just go with 800 ram then? I do 3d and use photoshop at home, that's why I want to go with the quad but I also game quite a bit as well (nwn2, guildwars, various fps). I really don't want to overclock.

I might just go for the ati bundle of the rx1950xtx +2 1gig sticks of ram, and grab another dual bundle of the same make...

I'm buying this from tigerdirect, if you want to see the prices and bundle...

If you're not going to be OCing, then the 800Mhz stuff is good. Having all that ram, even better . An Intel board, stability bliss . For that photoshop and 3D stuff you do, good picks, and w/that qx6700, who needs to OC?

Thanks guys, you've been quite helpful! I'm going to get some OCZ CrossFire that DH reviewed. Probably gonna skip out on the vid card for a little bit though, see what ati's next gen brings and put an old nvidia in the system at first. If I ever decide to oc the system, the review said the ram was pretty good for it. Then after that I want to finish this model:

and then make more! I'm getting excited again

Thanks, the reason I want to upgrade is because it takes almost 2 minutes to render her with hair, and when I make a small change and want to see what it does I hate sitting around for that time!
