Just got my mobo.. got a prob...

well i got it in ok and got everything hooked up right but my only problem is it freezes at the BIOS... i see the same screen when it boots up and it wont move. Ir also says the wrong processor speed but i kow i can fix that in CMOS. Now i need to know why it freezes when i bootup in BIOS...

what type of motherboard is it and what other hardware and fans and such do you have in it?

it is an Abit NF7 mobo and i have the hardware listed and one case fan...

Go barebones as possible and see if it boots then.

what screen do you see when it boots up?? any error messages?? try clearing the CMOS jumper. try taking out the battery for a few minutes with it unplujgged. Try holding down the INSERT key from even before powering it up. try booting from a floppy and flashing to latest released 1.6 BIOS..

clear your cmos, detach all possible hardware and make sure its at 133fsb in the bios. are you getting any beeps on startup?

yes... and i get beeps i can't get into cmos and i fixed the problem on my own. Thank you though. I would assume you would like to know the prob. RAM... i had a generic stick and my mobo didnt support it. So now i am down to 256 MB of PC-2100... but i will probably order 512 megs of PC-3200 tonight and get it in about a week. Which will be the soonest i am again allowed on my comp. now though i am going to have to reformat my HDD because windows XP restarts my computer before the boot screen fades in. So i am just all screwed up. Furthermore... my floppy drive isnt working right now... so i am going to have to get that working before i can do anything else!!! Actually though i am installing windows 2000 right now and will do probably a repair if not a clean install of XP. see you all in at MOST 2.5 months.

ok well i have my mobo in and my computer working... i ran 3dmark2003 (i dont have '03 on my computer yet...) and strangely i goy about 1500 points LESS than i used to get... i got a 7000. And i was expecting probably 1-1.5 thousand MORE points... well this was before i installed XPSP1 and overclocked my videocard and all. Also... i LOVE the feature in my CMOS that just lets me O/C by default. very cool. only downside now that my computer is working is that my hard drive sometimes screws up and my computer turns off and i have to clear the cmos to get everything working again!!! oh well... i will flash my bios next week. Maybe that will fix it

yea i know... but i think i will buy 512 megs of PC-3200 tonight or tommorow while i can still get name brand for $69 and free shipping!!! i am going to flash my bios in a few minutes after i get a new one.

so i flashed my bios and was happy because it made my MOBO support my RAM... then my computer starts randomly restarting... just incase i unplugged my second cdrom drive to conserve power and give other things more power. The restarting doesnt stop. Then i realise that before i put that RAM back in my computer didnt restart all the time. So i took it out and all's well. I have the newest BIOS and hopefully there will be no more random restarting...

If it is randomly restarting then your power supply isn't good enough (puts out enough wattage). If it is restarting while you are lets say.... playing a game or doing something that requires a lot of wattage the PSU trips, then restarts.

i thought of that at the time of my problem and unplugged one of my cdrom drives. It would restart during windows xp bootup and other times when it is sitting on the desktop. so i know its probably not the PSU. but i will get a new one just so i dont have to for a while

Um, it very well could be the PSU if it restarts while booting up. You need at least 300w to run the NF7.

He hasn't said what he has for a PSU. I read my NF7 manual...... says that the NF7 requires at LEAST a 300w PSU.

thats what i have but i dont have that extra connector with the 4 pins...

You don't need the extra 12v connector. It does help to keep the rig stable.... but it is not required. Oh, and by the way general. The 300w is just for the PSU... You need more wattage for other devices. I suggest you go buy one from Circuit City or Best Buy and try it out to see if that is the problem. If so, get someone to buy you one online and then return the PSU to where you intially bought it.

You can get adapters that will move from the standard molex connector to that special 4 pin square one, and it would probably help to have that plugged in...

my PSU i have now came with my case... and i will buy a new PSU. But i dont know how soon... it will be within the month i am sure. I am buuying more RAM and a new heatsink first however.
